Monographs by Gabriel Rabo

My article on Dayroyo Malke Aydin be Qasho Hahoyo has been published, in: Biographisch-Bibliographisches Kirchenlexikon, vol. 44, Nordhausen 2022, pp. 111-114.
Malke AYDIN, Syrian Orthodox abbot of the Monastery of the God-Bearer of Ḥaḥ, born on July 1, 1898, in Ḥaḥ, in Ṭur ‛Abdin (southeastern Turkey), died on April 11, 1964, in ʽUrdnus and buried on April 12, 1964, in the monastery of Mor Sargis and Mor Bakos in Ḥaḥ.
During the last quarter of the 20th century, the majority of Syrian people have been forced to leave their homeland in Southeast Anatolia and migrate to the Western countries. With the increase of confidence and freedom in the West, awareness has risen not only about the importance of protecting their religion, their language and their ethnic identity, but also the importance of developing their culture and tradition further. They have founded congregations in the towns and cities in which they live. Furthermore, they have built or tried to buy churches and monasteries. For the management of these dioceses, archbishops have been installed and assigned in the USA, Middle Europe, the Benelux and Scandinavian countries. Along with the growth of the Aramaeans, the number of churches and dioceses has also increased today. The Syrian Orthodox Church has also tried to get legal rights in the countries in which it is situated. The Syrians have the right to teach children and young adults their own religion and their own language both in church and in state schools. This article deals with the migration to the Western diaspora, the new shelter and the development of organizations from the eyes of a firsthand witness to these issues.

20. yüzyılın son çeyreğinde Süryaniler'in çoğu, ana vatanları Güneydoğu Anadolu'dan ayrılıp batı ülkelerine göç etmek zorunda kaldılar.

Translation:
"We stress that preliminary heuristic work for future editions has already been done. This monograph is presented simply as an edition of Bar Ṣalibi's commentary on the Epistle to the Romans, but it is in fact the result of a long-term work of G. RABO and a tool that is now indispensable for anyone interested in the works of this Syriac revivalist. We hope, therefore, that the publication of this book will encourage more scholars to work on Bar Ṣalibi, whose works remain little known and edited."
With this impeccable text edition and annotated translation, accompanied by much needed discussions of many aspects of Bar Ṣalibi’s legacy, the author has laid a robust foundation for all future research on this important scholar and leader of the Syriac Orthodox church. Particularly in his analysis of the manuscripts and in his many precious comments on textual details and historical content, the author brings together the worlds of Syriac Christian and Western scholarship, two worlds which in an impressive way converge and enrich each other in his work. He deserves the congratulations and profound thanks of all Syriac scholars.
This work is a doctoral thesis submitted to the theological Faculty of the Georg-August University in Göttingen in 2014. The work consists of three distinct parts. Part I (1-75) is an introduction to the life and works of ehe Syriac Orthodox Metropolitan of Amida (Diyarbakir) and prolific author Dionysius Bar Salibi (BS, d. 1171). Part II (77-295) gives the critical edition (wich clear and consistent apparacus) and cranslation of BS's Commentary on the Letter to the Romans. Part III (299-460) gives a complete survey of all the manuscripts of the works of BS, several of which were discovered and identified by Rabo. We should be grateful to the author for providing future researchers wich such a necessary tool. One of the attractive features of this study is that in footnotes Rabo gives many details culled from contemporary sources and/or not so easily accessible literature. The work concludes with an extensive bibliography.
