3. Speaking is Important
30% current weighting in GCSE CA
Can be embedded from KS2/3
Gets pupils ready for KS5 and beyond
Communication vs Grammar
Pupils need to feel like they can
communicate in order to be a ‘good’
languages student which can lead to
increased uptake
TL use?
4. How do we learn languages?
Krashen
• LAD
• comprehensible input
• language is acquired, not learned
• What language do we want pupils to
acquire? How can we go about
encouraging this?
5. How do we learn languages?
Chomsky
• Language cannot be learnt by rote as it
is too complex
• Grammatical and linguistic competence
• Communicative competence?
6. How do we teach languages?
Different approaches to learning a
language:
• Grammar-translation
• Audio-visual
• Communicative approach
• ‘University of Cumbria’ approach
7. The University of Cumbria
Approach (aka St Martins)
It involves the extensive use of the TL by
both pupils and teachers, through mimes,
song, team competition, linguistic visual
support, and high levels of interaction and
classroom routines which have the aim of
developing the conditions for spontaneous
talk whilst encouraging pupils to work things
out for themselves. Its fundamental
difference from CLT is that it promotes
accuracy at the same time as fluency
through enabling the pupils to focus on the
detail of how the language works.
8. My Research
Can using focussed TL help students to achieve
better grades in speaking assessments?
YES – through:
Drip feed language through routines, team
competition
Schemes of work developed with full activities
in mind
Allow for (not so) spontaneous speech (see
James Stubbs’ blog)
Well thought-out tasks that incorporate the
language required
9. TL or not to TL?
•
•
•
•
TL as much as you can
TL for the pupils as much as they can
Ask for permission to speak in English
Use regular classroom interaction as an
excuse to practise language
– Jesús, Mentiroso/a, Je m’excuse d’être en
retard, Mi pareja fue…
• Spontaneous speech helps in the oral exam
• Encourage and reward (team points)
10. TL Opportunities
• Use routines to enhance TL opportunities

30. ¿Qué hiciste la semana pasada?
Pasé el domingo en el centro
fui al cine con mi amigo
vi una peli, fue interesante
pero jugué al fútbol también.
El domingo pasado
estuve en Preston con mis padres
fui a tiendas, fui de compras
me lo pasé muy bien.
Después comimos en un restaurante,
la cena fue rica y sana.
Luego volvimos a casa
y jugamos un rato con el Play.

32. Planning a SoW
• What is your end activity?
– Pupil language (not content related)
– Interaction language (to work with others)
– Content language (main vocabulary)
• Drip feed this language all the way
through!
• Do activities that allow students to start
practising this (waystage)
• KS4 – aim at completing CA questions
including !
48. Use Technology!
• Speaking tools:
– Voki
– Animoto
– Tellagami
– Video
– Voice recorder eg. Audioboo
– Slideshare with sound
– See dominic_mcg’s session from Saturday!
49. Summary
• Plan for success
• What do you want them to be able to
achieve?
• Incorporate speaking activities
• Let them create something at the end
• Encourage and reward TL and
spontaneous speech
