Mainstream works compete for daily attention of media audiences, relying on the viewers' belief that desires, common to the entire society, can be realized in social reality. They raise the interest of the recipients mainly by means of perceived meanings, signs and values. Regarding the topic of the study, we assume that the story of audio-visual contents intended for children and youth equally reflects a set of several preferred values and signs from which the given content is built and which are part of most globally successful films. The main goal of the study is therefore the reflection of the globalization tendencies of the media industry in the sense of identifying the universal features and preferred values in mainstream images intended for children and youth. For the purpose of achieving this goal, we carry out a discursive analysis of the most commercially successful films of 2021 and one of the most profitable films worldwide within the entire “film history”, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021, director Jon Watts), based on the analytical categories defined in the methodological part of the study. In this context, it is necessary to define the discussed issue from a theoretical point of view (with an emphasis on the cultural overlap of stories intended for a mass audience) supplemented by a case study (discursive analysis) of representative research material.

At the same time, however, literary testimony presented through children’s perception and interpretation of reality can bring contemporary social or existential problems closer to the adult reader through imagery accessible to people of all ages. A representative result of the confrontation of the children’s and the adult world is also the literary work of the French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, originally intended for children. The depth and topicality of the philosophical fairy tale The Little Prince (originally in French, Le Petit Prince, first published in 1943) lie in the fact that it is one of the world’s most translated fairy tales, which has been the basis for numerous dramatic adaptations, re-editions and film adaptations. The main aim of the study is, therefore, to clarify the way the philosophical metanarrative of The Little Prince is expressed in the literary source and in the audiovisual film of the same name, The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince, 2015, directed by Mark Osborne). In order to achieve this goal, we apply a narrative analysis of both research materials based on analytical categories defined in the methodological section of the study. The identification and subsequent comparison of the chosen analytical categories is the starting point for determining the mode of filmic adaptation of the literary subject matter. The categorisation of film adaptations of literary works according to L. Giannetti and T. Leitch becomes the focus. Within the theoretical delineation of the issue under discussion, we point to its interdisciplinary character (the ‘intermingling’ of media and communication studies, literary criticism, but also media philosophy, film studies and other related disciplines), emphasising the cultural overlap of the philosophical metatheory of The Little Prince. This timelessness opens up space for further research into the possibilities of the story’s cinematic adaptations and interpretative planes. Characteristic logical-conceptual procedures are employed to achieve the stated aims.

Given the fact that the feature film Bohemian Rhapsody (2018, directed by Bryan Singer, later Dexter Fletcher) has changed the way we think about the economic and cultural potential of biopics entirely, the authors offer an overview of the current scholarly understanding of biographical films and their preferred means of expression. The main objective of the study is to define Bohemian Rhapsody’s narrative structure in light of the conventional genre patterns related to biopics. Acknowledging the movie’s unprecedented global success, the authors work with the assumption that as shown by Bohemian Rhapsody, certain biographical dramas can, in fact, become globally popular, especially if they are able to communicate celebratory life stories of the admired and famous in a manner that corresponds with their target audiences’ expectations. The assumption is addressed via a theoretical reflection on the given topic and through narrative analysis

The author works with the basic assumption that the appearance of avatars is formed in accordance with individual preferences of players, and that the consumers of digital games prefer to construct their virtual avatars as idealised versions of themselves. However, one question is yet to be answered – whether the manners in which players of digital games visually stylise their avatars reflect the hedonistic elements of sociocultural and media reality that are related to the cult of beauty and perfect body. The study defines the key terms associated with the analysed issue. The author pays special attention to game mechanics as means of interaction between the players and the digital game environments, especially to the game mechanics based on ‘serious’ entertainment, which are the only ones able to describe the simulative character of digital games in detail. As the author believes, simulation seen as imitation of real life is applicable to the process of constructing the looks of virtual game avatars. The study is based on the terminology of Media Studies, Ludology, Theory of Digital Games, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology. The questions of stylisation of virtual characters appearing in
digital games are reflected on via logical thought processes that are applied on purpose,
in order to offer a thorough discourse analysis on the given topic.

Given the fact that this feature film has changed the way we perceive the economic potential of biopics entirely, we offer an overview of some of the reasons why it was so successful in terms of the globalised film industry. The main objective of the study is to outline the biographical drama’s synergistic tendency in relation to the movie industry and the music business. Acknowledging Bohemian Rhapsody’s unprecedented global success, we work with the assumption that certain biographical dramas can, in fact, become globally popular, partly thanks to the fact that they utilise music as a nostalgia-driven narrative tool making portrayals of musicians deeper and more complex. The assumption is addressed via a theor...

Within the contribution the authors clarify the concepts of media reality, game, game principles, agon principle. The main aim of the authors is the explanation of issues such as game principles of Agony, mentioning his relationship with the current media art, especially with the plane of digital games. Theoretical reflection on the issue points out that the presently investigated agon game principles already existed in ancient Greece. His presence in the social games is the irreversible reality and manifest. Reflecting on the agon principle in the dimension of digital games remains a matter of discourse analysis. The primary objective of the authors is therefore an effort to explain the phenomenon. The secondary objective of the study is to point to the p...

Special attention is given to clarifying one of Roger Caillois’s game principles (mimicry) and its application into the process of creating digital games. The author defines corresponding terminological axis and works with an assumption that the reflection on identity transformation related to digital ‘mimicry games’ remains a subject of discourse analysis in the dimension of digital game studies. One of the aims of the article is thus to define the term “game” from the position of game studies, taking into account its multidisciplinary character. The analysed game principle mimicry is specified in greater detail; the existence of direct connection between ‘mimicry games’ and simulated, interactive or fantasy games represents an important base for further inquiry and is placed in the centre of the author’s attention. Based on the defined theoretical outlines, the author has an opportunity to apply the acquire...

The last section of their text describes consumers’ narratives with regard to their relationships with brands from the point of view of cognitive psychology. As Ruiz Collantes and Oliva show, the storytelling approach that has been developed from within the marketing discipline and which has been very fashionable and ‘must-read’ for several years in the marketing practise (Seth Godin, Stephen Denning, Ryan Mathews, Watts Wacker, Klaus Fog, Laurence Vincent, Kent Wertime, Jim Signorelli et al.), despite being focused on stories and their importance for branding and advertising communication, almost completely ignores discoveries of specific narratological theories. Instead, their sources are largely popular screenwriters’ manuals (McKee, for example). This is weak and sensitive side of the storytelling approach. After synchronic analyses of semiotics, anthr...

countries, nations, and individuals. Mass media are the primary cause of the aforementioned transformations. They are the ones that present national, local cultures and imbed their own values and convictions into them. Therefore, the main objective of the study is to evaluate the current status of mass media and the associated dominant (mass) culture within the system of other culture forms. Using the methods of logical analysis of text, we clarify the fundamental terminological axis. Terms such as “mass culture”, “media culture”, “popular culture”, “high culture”, “subculture”, and others become the subject of a closer theoretical reflection. Consequently, we use the acquired information in an effort to identify the impact of mass culture on selected cultural systems. Finally, we are interested in the rate of impact that the merging of cultural elements has on the perception of cultural identity. We start from the premise that although cultural identity is considered a basis of existence of individual cultures, its position within the maze of cultural systems is not that significant. The aforementioned marks the importance of continuous analysis of the issue in question with regard to the ever changing socio-cultural environment, which poses new challenges for media studies regarding research of selected cultural phenomena. We analyse the discussed topic on the basis of the mass communication theory, media studies, cultural studies, psychology, and media sociology.
use the available game mechanics to project this identity into the shape of
variable characters. This raises a question whether an image created in this way
influences mental and physical life of a player. Therefore, the main objective of
the submitted study is to clarify the issue of a relationship between a technically
conditioned environment of digital game and sociocultural reality. The basis for
this study constitutes a research conducted by N. Yee and J. Bailenson in 2007
named Proteus effect, reflecting individual aspects of self-presentation and
transformation of a player in digital games, as well as a more long-term impact of
the Proteus effect on player’s physical world. The ambition of the study is to follow
up on the research – through a quantitative evaluation of a survey conducted in
a form of a questionnaire, the author will acquire information about knowledge,
attitudes, and opinions of selected respondents (digital games players) on the
issue of projection of virtual and real images of an individual. An important role
in specifying particular possibilities of transformation and self-presentation of a
player in digital games according to the Proteus effect is played by the methods
of logical analysis of text. The author builds their description of the discussed
topic on media studies, ludology, digital games theory, philosophy, psychology,
and sociology.
