I'm a library and information scientist at the Freie Universität Berlin (Germany) in the department Services for Research at the university library. Currently, I'm working in the project Distributed Network for Publishing Services of the Berlin University Alliance. Besides open access and scholarly publishing, my research interests cover the intersection of knowledge organization, developmental psychology, and cultural anthropology.

Advances in Knowledge Organization. Knowledge Organization across Disciplines, Domains, Services and Technologies, 2022
Across disciplines concerned with human categorization like psychology, anthropology, linguistics... more Across disciplines concerned with human categorization like psychology, anthropology, linguistics, and philosophy, there is a well-established distinction between monothetic and polythetic approaches to the formation and use of categories, concepts, and classes. This is often contrasted as the classical view versus the prototype theory. While monothetic classification is based on classes that are defined by a set of necessary and sufficient properties shared by all of its members, polythetic classification is based on classes in which members share a significant number of properties but none of these has to be found in all members. In the field of knowledge organization, the monothetic-polythetic distinction presents “a difference that makes a difference” (Jacob 2004, 515) and it has been emphasized that since human cognition can shift seamlessly between both forms of representation, there is a need for “multilevel approaches” (Priss 2001, 60). This paper takes a cognitive-developmental perspective and argues that polythetic classification precedes monothetic classification in both individual and collective development. It is suggested that the classical view and the prototype theory are simply concerned with different developmental stages of classificatory cognition that coexist in the human mind as Integrative Levels of Knowing. Thus, a more comprehensive framework that includes both of them offers comparative tools for cross-cultural and historical analyses of knowledge organization systems like library classifications, and of collective representations like symbolic classifications and folk taxonomies.

It will be demonstrated that this concept has found different articulations (e.g., levels of integration, levels of organization, levels of complexity, levels of granularity, nested hierarchy, specification hierarchy, hierarchical integration, progressive integration, holarchy, superformation, self-organization cycles) and widespread applications based on various, often unrelated theoretical and disciplinary backgrounds. In order to determine its role in the field of knowledge organization, some common misconceptions and major criticisms will be reconsidered in light of a broader multidisciplinary context. In particular, it will be shown how this organizing principle has been fruitfully applied to human-related research areas such as psychology, social sciences, or humanities in terms of integrative levels of knowing.

In these working notes, my focus will be on three main issues, namely, on the concept of phenomenon (1), on modeling levels of being (2), and on the relevance of levels of knowing for knowledge organization (3). Furthermore, I will present a selected bibliography on the proposed concept of Integrative Levels of Knowing (ILK) (4), which might hopefully inspire some further discussion.

In particular, it will be explored to what extent the well-known organizing principle of integrative levels that presents a developmental hierarchy of complexity and integration can be applied for a basic classification of viewpoints or epistemic outlooks. The central thesis pursued in this investigation is that an adequate analysis of such epistemic contexts requires tools that allow to compare and evaluate divergent or even conflicting frames of reference according to context-transcending standards and criteria. This task demands a theoretical and methodological foundation that avoids the limitation of radical contextualism and its inherent threat of a fragmentation of knowledge due to the alleged incommensurability of the underlying frames of reference. Based on Jürgen Habermas’s Theory of Communicative Action and his methodology of hermeneutic reconstructionism, it will be argued that epistemic pluralism does not necessarily imply epistemic relativism and that a systematic organization of the multiplicity of perspectives can benefit from already existing models of cognitive development as reconstructed in research fields like psychology, social sciences, and humanities. The proposed cognitive-developmental approach to knowledge organization aims to contribute to a multi-perspective knowledge organization by offering both analytical tools for cross-cultural comparisons of knowledge organization systems (e.g., Seven Epitomes and Dewey Decimal Classification) and organizing principles for context representation that help to improve the expressiveness of existing documentary languages (e.g., Integrative Levels Classification). Additionally, the appendix includes an extensive compilation of conceptions and models of Integrative Levels of Knowing from a broad multidisciplinary field.

Following Emile Durkheim’s and Marcel Mauss’ questioning about the origin of primitive forms of classification, a more advanced approach to the structural genesis of classificatory cognition is adopted. In opposition to the prevailing cultural relativism this methodological contribution to information history provides a point of departure for intercultural research on knowledge organization.

The book opens with chapters that situate the roots of cybersemiotics in Peircean semiotics, describe the advent of the Information Age and cybernetics, and lay out the proposition that notions of system, communication, self-reference, information, meaning, form, autopoiesis, and self-control are of equal topical interest to semiotics and systems theory. Subsequent chapters introduce a cybersemiotic viewpoint on the capacity of arts and other practices for knowing. This suggests pathways for developing Practice as Research and practice-led research, and prompts the reader to view this new configuration in cybersemiotic terms. Other contributors discuss cultural and perceptual shifts that lead to interaction with hybrid environments such as Alexa. The relationship of storytelling and cybersemiotics is covered at chapter length, and another chapter describes an individual-collectivity dialectics, in which the latter (Commind) constrains the former (interactants), but the former fuels the latter. The concluding chapter begins with the observation that digital technologies have infiltrated every corner of the metropolis - homes, workplaces, and places of leisure - to the extent that cities and bodies have transformed into interconnected interfaces. The book challenges the reader to participate in a broader discussion of the potential, limitations, alternatives, and criticisms of cybersemiotics.
