They can be used as instruments for good projects and, to some, for evil activities. This paper discussed the above assertion by evaluating the role of the media in fostering globalization process, showing the inevitability of information and communication technology in the post-modern era. Media is necessary for global politics to thrive, especially the global yearning for democratization; for international economy to become more robust; and for peace to be achieved. But the obverse aspect of the media showed that, the media of communication and their related technologies constitute avenue for terrorist groups to spread propaganda for manipulating public perception of their activities; justify their cause; form forums for group chats, and invite as well as recruit gullible youth or potential followers. The modern ICT also provides shortcut to criminal victimization; it facilitates e-crime and e-terrorism. With spec...

However, the definition of the act of prostitution has been metamorphosing for centuries from acceptable to illegal and then (in some jurisdictions) to criminal again, agitations by advocates have also necessitated the nomenclatural alteration from āprostitutionā to ācommercial sex workā. Globalization processes has also changed the pattern of this business to a transnational activity. Although there are many willing transnational commercial sex workers, but organized criminal syndicates are using this development to traffic some women and children with the false promises of getting a lucrative from overseas but ultimately subject them to sex exploitation, child prostitution and sex labor. To do that, the article reviewed some security challenges in Nigeria and examined how they undermine the developmental aspiration of the country. Security of life and property is tied with the fundamental human rights partly because both security and freedom are indicators of development and partly because lack of individual and group freedom is squarely implicated on their ability to do everyday life activities within the context of all social structures- political, economic, socio-cultural, and religious. The paper adopted Conflict theory and Amartya Senās (1999) Development as Freedom thesis to explain the nexus between security and development in Nigeria. Although they are no longer new to the modern criminal justice system, particularly in the area of corrections, people have continued to doubt their effectiveness in correcting the behavior of individuals. This paper reviewed literature on the history and purpose of Borstal homes as well as those on their effectiveness in Nigeria. It was found that, virtually all Borstal institutions in Nigeria are not living up to their expectations. Due to the dearth of facilities in the borstal centers, many juvenile delinquents are sent to adult prisons as a result of which they learn more offending, become recidivists and hardened criminals at adulthood. Those living within the borstals are not given adequate care. The paper suggested that, schools, familie...

This can serve as a giant stride for industrializing the sector as well as for achieving food security thereby reducing poverty rate to a bearable minimum. Using modern technology and methods in agricultural production should be supplemented by modern marketing in agro-business, adequate information and agricultural sustainability for the safety of our environment. The study found that agriculture played a significant role in the Nigeria's economic growth and its downturn is one of the contributory factors of high rate of poverty in the country, hence its revitalization will make a great difference. It also found out that majority of Nigerians(rural dwellers in particular) are engaging in agriculture as a source of livelihood or income, but very negligible few are aware of modern agriculture. Similarly, very few are benefiting from assistance made by government and NGOs. Therefore, there is the dire nee...

Specifically, it aims at studying how social media can lead to divorce among couples. Using stratified random sampling technique, a structured questionnaire was distributed to 140 respondents as well as interview with two more respondents. The data collected from the surveys were presented in a frequency distribution table with simple percentage. Qualitative method was also employed to reflect the data sourced from interview. The study found that, more women are subscribing to the social media and irrespective of sex differences, social media users are spending more time using the social network sites. Facebook is the most frequently used social network site in the study area. Moreover, majority of the respondents believed social media can lead to infidelity and all of them agreed it can lead to divorce. The paper suggests that, people should be wary of how they utilize the social media, who they interact with in social media platform, and what they post or share. New human invention is not entirely positive; society should therefore check the possible damages it can cause to our collective morality. Society can achieve this by orientating young people and adults alike on proper social media usage. Keywords: Communication, divorce, infidelity, social media, social network sites

The objectives of the study are: to investigate the extent of drug abuse among youths in Nigeria; to determine the nexus between drug abuse and criminal behaviour; and to explore the relevance of crime prevention strategies in fighting drug abuse among youths in Nigeria. Methodologically, the study used qualitative secondary data. The study showed that drug abuse is a universal social problem, especially among youths; and in Nigeria, the problem is very high as both street youths and collegiate adolescents abuse drugs. The study also showed that there is positive link between drug use and crime-crime causes drug abuse as some crimes need courage through drugs; drug causes crime because youths involve in both crimes against person and crimes against property, depending on the type of drug (hard drugs, such as cocaine and heroin cause violent crime and soft drugs, such as marijuana cause less serious offences). To overcome the drug-crime problem, the paper proposed crime prevention strategies. This approach is empirically proven to be effective in fighting crime and if used to fight drug abuse, it will also be useful in providing other benefits, such preventing crimes associated with drug abuse, as well as preventing drug's harms to health.

The objectives of the study are: to determine the link between inequality and Boko Haram insurgency in Yobe State; to find out whether or not poverty has instigated Boko Haram insurgent movement; to investigate how high rate of unemployment led to the Boko Haram insurgency; and to examine the role of illiteracy and wrong religious interpretation in the formation of Boko Haram radicalised ideology. The study used primary and secondary data, as well as qualitative (in-depth interview) data. Using multi-stage sampling technique, the study selected twenty respondents. It is the finding of the study that, inequality instigated the Boko Haram because some segments of a population feel segregated and dominated they can violently react. Poverty, unemployment and illiteracy also led to the emergence of the Boko Haram, because most of the members of the group engage in menial jobs for they are not well educated and this increased the tendency for poverty. Many youths also joined the group as an available alternative in the face of high unemployment. The study recommended that: fighting insurgency should be made side-by-side with fighting inequality, poverty, unemployment, and making quality education accessible across lower and upper classes and rural and urban populations. Proactive measures against youths' radicalisation and spread of misconstrued religious doctrines should also be at the heart of any government at all levels.

The paper adopted the theory of politicised identity to explain how political violence is justified by some ethnics against other groups in the country. Nigeria is a diverse country; comprising multi-cultural population, religious, linguistic, tribal, as well as regional differences. Despite efforts at stabilising the country's political structure through federalism, there is evidence of serious political instability and violent political struggle along ethnic lines. From the country's independence in 1960 till date, ethnicity has been one of the major factors that shape the political system. As a result, inclinations to political parties are influenced by ethnic-nationalism and violent inter-ethnic confrontations are very common. Also, religious bigotry remains a source of conflict in Nigeria. The paper concluded that ethnic-nationalism is causing violent political confrontations between Nigerians and is still playing role in the retrogression of Nigeria's politics especially with the issue of democratisation process. To overcome the negative effect of ethnicity on the Nigerian politics, political leaders, religious and traditional leaders should serve as role models and call for national unity and patriotism rather ethnic-nationalism.

Using theoretical arguments, the paper holds that, the current security challenges that bedeviled Nigeria are attributable to injustice, corruption and selfish governance by the leadership class. Widespread corrupt practices in the country have made it difficult for things to go right, hence mismanagement, incompetence and large scale loot by the leaders. In essence, most of the Nigeria's economic and political problems are associated with corruption, especially political corruption. Political corruption is largely the sleaze conduct of the leadership class. Corruption has now becomes norm in the Nigerian politics. As a result, credibility gave way to all filthy leadership practices from embezzlement to lack of accountability. This study examined the extent of political corruption, its impacts on credible leadership and militating factors against successful anti-corruption campaign in Nigeria. It is the findings of the study that, corruption is perpetuated by individual propensity to deviate. But the counter-position is also true; the system (Nigerian society) that breeds and condones corruption is also blameworthy. The paper called for constructive measures to check the menace of political corruption in Nigeria through constitutional reforms like review, if not abolition, of immunity (sub)sections enjoyed by some incumbent political leaders, decentralization, and harsh punishment, to serve as deterrence, are necessary to bring back the good image of Nigeria and to deliver the masses from sufferings due to political corruption.

Community policing is a philosophy that started many decades back in the United Kingdom and United States, but did not come to Nigeria until 2004. This policing strategy has been incorporated into modern policing so that the police will respond to democratic system of governance. Community policing should be welcomed not only because traditional policing has been failing because it is reactive rather than proactive, but also, the police personnel are part and parcels of the community that they serve. Three strategies make community policing quite distinct from traditional policing: community partnership, organizational transformation, and problem-solving. Looking at the prevailing insecurity in Nigeria, adherence to the principles of community policing will help the Nigeria Police Force to overcome the security challenges. Among other challenges of national development, Nigeria is suffering from colossal corruption, selfish leadership, poor economic policy and dependency on foreign aids. As a multi-ethnic country, there were and still are mutual hostilities among different ethnics that make up the country. Nigeria shall utilize this melting pot character as an impetus for development, but reverse is the case because of the incessant conflicts between the diverse communities. These factors combined culminated in widespread unemployment, poverty, intertribal and intra-tribal conflicts, formation of youth violent groups and insurgencies. It does not matter who initiated the problem, what matters is how much effort a country exerts to find solution to its developmental challenges. The paper suggests that, the solution to these problems is to establish justice, equity and equality, fight corruption and make jobs available for the youth population in order to achieve peace and national development.
