This study examined the technical efficiency of smallholder pearl millet farmers in north-western Nigeria. Using a sample of 430 smallholder farmers in the Kano and Jigawa states, the data for the study were collected during the 2015/2016 cropping season. Stochastic frontier analysis and least square regression were used to estimate the technical efficiency of millet farmers and to examine its determinants, respectively. The results obtained from the stochastic frontier analysis show substantial technical inefficiency among smallholder pearl millet farmers. The results reveal that all the six production variables used in the model: farm size, fertilizer, manure, labour, seed, and agrochemical, had a positive technical relationship with pearl millet output and were statistically significant. The elasticity of production, with a value of 1.83, showed that the pe...

However, the level of inputs used in its production are not at the optimum level. This study examined the resource use efficiency of rice producers in Kura LGA of Kano State, Nigeria. Data used for the study was obtained by scheduled interview using structured questionnaires administered to 115 respondents selected using a simple random sampling procedure. Descriptive statistics, budgetary techniques and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Results obtained revealed that the mean age of the farmers was 31 years, most of the farmers were male, educated and with farming experience of 8 years. Results for profitability of rice production showed that the net farm income for rice production was N176922.2 with a return to Naira investment value of 2.7. This implies that 1N invested on rice production would give a return of N1.7. Results for regression analysis showed that farm size, agrochemicals, and labour had a significan...

Climatic changes and global warming are among the frequently cited examples. However, it is still true that, hurricane and tornado, are not only linked to the global warming, but are also precipitated by the human day-to-day exploitation of the environment. This couple of environmental disaster has been ravaging many human and animal populations for an eon. The study found that, the incidences of hurricane and tornado devastate the well being of inhabitants of the affected environment, staggering lost of valuable resources, population displacement, destruction of public and private and buildings are also potential consequences of these disasters. Destruction of farm lands is perhaps the most threatening to agricultural production and it is recorded to be one of the outcomes these disasters. This can serve as a giant stride for industrializing the sector as well as for achieving food security thereby reducing poverty rate to a bearable minimum. Using modern technology and methods in agricultural production should be supplemented by modern marketing in agro-business, adequate information and agricultural sustainability for the safety of our environment. The study found that agriculture played a significant role in the Nigeria's economic growth and its downturn is one of the contributory factors of high rate of poverty in the country, hence its revitalization will make a great difference. It also found out that majority of Nigerians(rural dwellers in particular) are engaging in agriculture as a source of livelihood or income, but very negligible few are aware of modern agriculture. The result suggests that variables were cointegrated based on Engle-granger two step technique. Moving to threshold auto regressive (TAR) and momentumthreshold auto regressive (M-TAR) the finding reveals that based on the latter variables were asymmetrically cointegrated as null hypothesis of no cointegration was rejected at 1% significance level based on Enders and Siklos (2001), while the former shows that variables do not have long-run relationship and the speed of adjustment is symmetric. This signifies that increase in the prices of shares in Malaysian stock market could lead to Malaysian Ringgit appreciation over other major global currencies. Empirical evidence indicates that the main problem in pearl millet production in Nigeria is associated with low productivity and inefficiency in allocation of resources. This study therefore sought to analyse the Technical Efficiency (TE) of pearl millet farmers in Kano State of Nigeria, being the state with highest concentration of pearl millet farmers. SFA approach is used on a data collected from 256 randomly sampled pearl millet farmers during 2013/2014 cropping season. The study discovers that all the production inputs/variables included in the Cobb-Douglas Stochastic Frontier function with exception of agrochemicals were positively and significantly associated with TE. The TE range of 21% to 94% and mean TE of 73% were obtained from the analysis. The study also reveals that access to credit, education, extension and household size were the major con...

Primary data were collected from 430 pearl millet farmers through the use of structured questionnaires. Systematic random sampling technique was used for this study. Analytical techniques used for analysis were descriptive statistics, net farm income, OLS and stochastic frontier production model. The descriptive statistics results shows that the respondents had mean age of 39 years with 10.7 years of pearl millet production experience. Greater portion of the respondents (92.60 percent) were males and most of them (67.00 percent) were married. Majority (28.8 percent) of the farmers cultivated between 1.5 to 2.4 hectares of land during 2013/2014 seasons, and about (50 percent) of them acquired their farmland through inheritance. The average household size was 7 persons, while about (43.72 percent) of the farmers had no extension contact during the 2013/20...

An annual time series data was used for the period of 32 years from 1981 to 2013, and Auto Regressive Distributed Lags (ARDL) cointegration approach was employed in achieving the objective of the study. The result revealed that, both short run and long run models were cointegrated. Agricultural raw material export and exchange rate are instatistically and negatively related to GDP with the exception of exchange rate. Therefore, this paper suggested as part of its policy recommendation that, the Federal Republic of Nigeria in line with its transformation agenda should focus more on human capital, infrastructural and agricultural sector development, and not only increase export of agricultural raw materials, but also encourage exportation of processed agricultural products for achieving inclusive economic growth and development. Either of the two objectives of production requires efficient use of farm resources as efficiency is at the heart of agricultural production. In this paper, stochastic frontier cost model is used to analyze the allocative efficiency of part-time food crop farmers in Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State, North Central Nigeria and also to establish the socio-economic factors that determine allocative efficiency. It is evident from the study that part-time food crop farmers are not fully efficient in their allocation of production resources. This was confirmed by the presence of allocative inefficiency effects in part-time food crop farming with average allocative efficiency of 97.95 %. The study also revealed that rising age and household size contribute to allocative inefficiency in part-time food crop farming, while level of education and farming ...

Based on Engle-Granger we found that the variables are cointegrated means there exist long-run relationship. However, when we move on to TAR and MTAR models the findings are opposite as there is no element of cointegration and the speed of adjustment is symmetric. This shows that based on TAR and MTAR models the effects of exchange rates on crude oil prices is insignificant. The policy relevance is that South African authority need to monitor its exchange rates persistently related to other currencies more especially American dollar because it determined the crude oil prices that might have greater influences on other macroeconomic variables.

The study adopted literature review; whereby secondary data have been used. The assumption of the study was that improvement in farming is directly connected with improvement in farmer’s income and livelihood. Also, that mechanised agriculture is necessary for productivity, and by implication increases profit in farm production. Tractor is one of the major farm tools that enhance mechanisation in agriculture. Therefore, incorporating the mechanisation, notably tractor is essential because it affects the farmer’s livelihoods and living conditions. The finding of the study indicated that tractor plays significant role as it is established that crop-production increased through tractor use, which increased the farmers’ income, giving room for increased production capacity...
