The mass media, which is the watchdog of society, plays significant roles in addressing critical ... more The mass media, which is the watchdog of society, plays significant roles in addressing critical societal issues and improving the people's general well-being. In recent times, promoting public health and preventing the spread of dangerous diseases has become an integral part of the mass media. This paper carried out an overview of how online newspapers in Nigerian played a significant role in enlightening the public about the Coronavirus (COVID19 pandemic). The content analysis research method was used for four months, from 28th February 2020 (a day after the pandemic's first case was recorded in Nigeria) to 29th June 2020. The online editions of Vanguard, Daily Trust, and The Sun newspapers were analyzed, taking into cognizant the Covid-19 news stories, opinion, and editorials in order to find out the extent to which online newspapers in Nigeria paid more attention to the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly in the area of educating and enlightening the community about the fatal nature of the disease and how to live with it. The result shows that all the three newspapers analyzed gave special consideration to the Covid-19 pandemic in their daily reporting. The paper recommends that public health issues and the outbreak of a deadly disease should be given more attention. The journalists covering such issues should be well equipped and research-oriented in their newsgathering and reporting.

Fake news is simply 'misinformation" and "disinformation" and it has being spreading like wild fire in every facet of the society ranging from religious, cultural, economic, politics and social life. The most disturbing area of concern over fake news in Nigeria is national peace and security because it is one of the greatest challenges facing the country at the moment. National peace and security is paramount for the social, economic, educational, technological, cultural, ideological growth of the nation. This paper is aim at examining the implications of fake news to national peace and security, conceptual definition of fake news, national peace and security history of fake news, ways in which fake news can be curbed and how to identify fake news. The author discovered that fake news enhances religious crisis, genocide, communal clashes, jungle justice, electoral violence etc. The paper recommends how the media which is the watchdog of the society and charged with the responsibility of disseminating news and information in the society can help in sensitizing the public about the implications of fake news to national peace and security and the general growth of a country.

COVID-19 pandemic has affected not just the health and economic sector but it has given rise to n... more COVID-19 pandemic has affected not just the health and economic sector but it has given rise to numerous fake news, rumors, misinformation, hoaxes and conspiracy theories all over the globe. Such rumors and misinformation contributed to the rapid spread of the virus, self-medication, mysterious deaths and this menace has been reported globally. This paper is aimed at revealing some of the misinformation and fake news circulating social media in Nigeria during the Coronavirus pandemic using “Whatsapp” and “Facebook” forwarded messages and proffer recommendations. Content analysis research method was used to collect data from social media for the period of 5 weeks beginning from 11thJuly to 8th August 2020. The data collected have shown that the fake news came in form of the origin of the virus, spread of the virus, preventive measures, cure etc. As part of the recommendations, the mass media and relevant stakeholders should build strategic platforms for disseminating authentic public health messages. Also, advanced technology should be used to detect and remove fake online contents without genuine sources.
