While the notion of tradition has developed a pejorative reputation, there are voices (Wittgenste... more While the notion of tradition has developed a pejorative reputation, there are voices (Wittgenstein and MacIntyre) calling for a refurbishing of the concept. Sub-traditions and religious communities engender loyalty that shapes the members' worldview, convictions, emotions, and practices. This essay reflects on the impact of a particular religious tradition-Anabaptism-on the author's life and practice as a psychologist engaged in teaching, research, and psychotherapy. A brief history of this movement, its beliefs, its exemplars, and archetypal stories are reviewed. That is followed by a summary of five themes in theological anthropology found in various Anabaptist writers: an ethical perspective on being human, the self as communal, Christ as model of the political self, the sacrality of individual and collective life, the mystery of personhood, and a historical view of sin. This essay explores integration as reconciliation between cultures. Both the languages of theolog... more This essay explores integration as reconciliation between cultures. Both the languages of theology and psychology represent different cultures and different languages. Failure to respect the integrity and differences between them tends to result in reducing one to the other. Differences are, for some, the accursed result of Babel. Rationalist approaches to integration are concerned to harmonize these differences, sometimes into a single language, a kind of Esperanto. Others, like the Ephraimites, simply reject those who cannot pronounce "Shibboleth," i.e., who do not speak their language. Our concern here will be to think of Pentecost as not only the blessing of diverse languages but also as reconciliation between academic cultures. Such reconciliation is built on Christ as foundation and hopefully, issues forth in more integrated individuals and in the creation of a community of scholars unafraid to collaborate.

Using Niebuhr's (1951) five models of interaction between Christ and culture as heuristic, it is ... more Using Niebuhr's (1951) five models of interaction between Christ and culture as heuristic, it is suggested that there are of necessity a variety of strategies between Christianity and psychology. Each proposed strategy for interaction is constructed to protect the integrity of the Church's vision while recognizing those aspects of culture which are useful and helpful to the Church. The five strategies proposed and discussed at length are critique, analogy, translation, dialogue, and witness.
The thesis advanced is that people remember nonsensical pictures much better if they comprehend w... more The thesis advanced is that people remember nonsensical pictures much better if they comprehend what they are about. Two experiments supported this thesis. In the first, nonsensical "droodles" were studied by subjects with or without an accompanying verbal interpretation of the pictures. Free recall was much better for subjects receiving the interpretation during study. Also, a later recognition test showed that subjects receiving the interpretation rated as more similar to the original picture a distractor which was close to the prototype of the interpreted category. In Experiment II, subjects studied pairs of nonsensical pictures, with or without a linking interpretation provided, Subjects who heard a phrase identifying and interrelating the pictures of a pair showed greater associative recall and matching than subjects who received no interpretation. The results suggest that memory is aided whenever contextual cues arouse appropriate schemata into which the material to be learned can be fitted,
