This is seemingly not unconnected to the fact that the practice of archaeology in the country is faced with a lot of challenges, especially in the recent times. Thus, the aim of this research is to discuss the nature of some of these challenges and make some suggestions that can largely improve archaeological practice in the country. The research draws from past/recent concerns that have negatively impacted archaeology and its practice in the country. Much of the data for this research has been elicited from primary and secondary sources. The paper notes that the benefits of archaeology and its practice to Nigeria and her citizens are enormous and therefore, adequate to give all cultural heritage (CH) stakeholders a strong motivation towards repositioning the discipline. Doing this appropriately implies that, Nigeria has begun the journey towards benefiting from the numerous opportunities presented by the discipline for sustainable development.

Archaeological activities and findings have the ability to provide positive answers to the general social instability in a nation (as being experienced or witnessed in Nigeria in particular and West Africa in general). This research is of the opinion that, the archaeological education and engagement is a good asset to a nation's quest for peace and security which can bring about social stability. This is what Nigeria as a nation require at the moment. Archaeological knowledge can be pulled to provide possible solutions to the numerous challenges confronting Nigeria (particularly instability and insecurity) that are causing none-patriotism and disunity in Nigeria today. This is because archaeological resources have the ability to reveal the vast range of human cultural achievements and struggles in the past. The paper articulates that, reviewing the principles, regulations, norms, values and the kind of social organs that helped to drive the past societies can help to ascertain causes of today's problems/situations, which will then provide positive remedy to the problems. The paper suggests that archaeology should be introduced in the primary and secondary levels of education in Nigeria to avail children with the opportunity to grow with African cultural norms and values which promotes good behaviour, neighbourliness, respect for elders/human-lives and tolerance.

The leaves of trees that fall on the ground add nutrients to the soil which in turn enhances the growth of both plants and animals. Trees serve both as food, medicine and raw materials for making of tools, weapons, furniture, and construction or building of local bridges and structures amongst others. Trees, both in the past and present have also been utilized for religious and commercial purposes in various societies, and this entails why once archaeologists identifies certain categories of trees on the site, such immediately motivate an interest in to the investigation of their significance to the cultural development of the people under study. Thus, this article presents an overview of the significance of common tree categories often identified on archaeological sites in the Middle Belt Region of Nigeria. Major concern in this article is directed towards finding their botanical or scientific names, common names, local names and their significance to the cultural development of the host communities (both past and present). The overall aim of this research is to provide a reference material to students and other researchers in the fields of archaeology, anthropology, sociology, history, ethnography and geography amongst others, who are often, faced with the challenge of identifying appropriately; their names and significance, while on the field. Most of the data used is acquired from site and ethnographic surveys in the Middle Belt Region of Nigeria.

The paper highlights the major roles of archaeology in the progress and development of tourism industry in Nigeria, and note, the unfortunate deliberate non-recognition of the discipline by the tourism sector in the country. It contended that despite this problem, archaeology has done a lot and more is still being done by archaeology and the archaeologists to unveil a lot about the past achievements of Nigerian people. To this end, there is an urgent need for a holistic approach to archaeological research and complete integration of archaeology into the tourism industry in Nigeria. The data for this research was collected through consultation of secondary sources like thesis, textbooks and journals amongst others.

They can also serve as sources of income and economic empowerment for the people. One of these events is the Pus Kat annual cultural festival of the Mwaghavul nation in Plateau State of Central Nigeria. The Pus Kat annual cultural festival normally brings together the Mwaghavul people and their neighbors both at home and in the diaspora. The festival normally serves as an avenue for unity, progress, and development of the Mwaghavul nation. The main aim of this paper is to appraise the economic impact of the cultural festival on the host community, the Mwaghavul nation at large as well as its neighborhood. The paper used both primary and secondary sources of data collection. However, the paper dwelled more on the primary sources and minimally on the secondary sources. The methodology employed in this paper is the survey method. Information was generated through observation and oral interviews. The secondary data were obtained from a few already documented materials such as textbooks, journal articles, and internet materials. Findings from the research revealed that the Pus Kat annual cultural festival has fared well as a vehicle for unity, progress, development, poverty reduction, and economic empowerment within the host community, the Mwaghavul nation at large. It also found that the influx of visitors from different places is true which in turn boosts the economic activities in the area. The paper recommends among others the need for more resources to be injected into the event by both the Nigerian government (particularly Mangu Local Government) and industries particularly SWAN Nigeria Ltd (a subsidiary of UAC) located within the area as part of its corporate social responsibilities as well as well-meaning spirited individuals.
