Iuri Moscardi is a PhD Candidate in Comparative Literature at the Graduate Center of the City University di New York, and teaches Italian language and literature at Hunter College and Fordham University. He studied Cesare Pavese during his university years at Università degli Studi di Milano: his Bachelor degree thesis focused on the end of the American myth in "The Moon and the Bonfires" and his Master degree thesis (Premio Cesare Pavese), analyzed the typescript of the first Italian translation of "Spoon River Anthology", proving the role of Pavese as editor of Fernanda Pivano's translation. In 2016 he received a MA in Italian from Indiana University, Bloomington, and he is currently in New York. Because of his interest in Pavese, since 2012 he has been involved in the digital social reading experiments of TwLetteratura and Betwyll, now at the center of his dissertation research. He has published academic articles and essays on Pavese, in Italian and English, and edited the new, complete English translation of Pavese's Mestiere di vivere. For Fondazione Pavese, besides the column Dialogues with Pavese he created two series of video interviews and is currently researching on the books donated by the Molina family to Fondazione Pavese. Erudite and refreshing, these readings address relevant topics such as Pavese’s (and Pasolini’s) use of myth, his relationship with American literature and American publishers, and his function in the Italian and Western canon of Modernist literature.

Pavese defined his literary production as the process of clarification of the myth, which he tried to accomplish obstinately in all of his works (the so-called «fragments of the monolith»). For him, the myth coincided with the archetypical image of the hill, the dwelling place of the irrational whose blood and sacrifice are manifestations ("Paesi tuoi", "La casa in collina", "La luna e i falò"). The exception of this are two novels: "La spiaggia" (1942), which «is not fragment of the monolith», and "Il compagno" (1947), «a political Bildungroman about the rise of a Communist political conscience». What make them different from the rest of Pavese’s work is that they miss the mythological element: in both of these novels, hills are almost completely missing. With my essay, I would like to show how this missing element deprive the novels of a full aesthetical completeness, forcing Pavese to rely on social elements (the description of a bourgeois environment and the awareness of an antifascist conscience). When Pavese gives up his intent of clarification of the myth, his writing lacks autonomy.

It is based on the philological analysis of a typescript located at the Biblioteca Pivano in Milan, which contains the complete translation of the anthology and two series of handwritten corrections by Pivano and by Pavese respectively. The preparation of the typescript preceded the publishing process: Pivano corrected her first mistakes and tried to fill the missing parts she was not able to translate; Pavese significantly modified Pivano’s very literal translation, changing the graphic form of the poems, moving words and deleting parts of the composition, in order to give the poems more fluency and figurative effectiveness. Almost all of his corrections became part of the printed text.

This intervention analyzes two Digital Social Reading projects organized on Twitter in 2012 and 2013, following the so-called twitteratura method and focused on Cesare Pavese' "La luna e i falò" and "Dialoghi con Leucò". For this reason, they can be considered as material demonstration of the reception theory of the literary text as developed by Wolfgang Iser, who labeled it "reader-response criticism".

I studied these projects following the reception theory of the literary text, considering them as a new, interactive, and active form of reception, which every reader expresses in his or her tweets. Indeed, these projects emphasize the relevance of the reader in building the sense of the text.

Elvira Di Fabio. The students wanted to deepen their knowledge of Italian dialects: for this reason, they chose six proverbs, each of them written in a different dialect, and published them on Betwyll, the app for social reading developed by TwLetteratura. The project was open to all the members of the Betwyll community, who needed to comment on the proverbs in twylls (messages as short as 140 characters) employing a specific writing style (write their message as a recipe, as a dream, or as if they were writing a letter in an official tone). By analyzing some of the twylls produced and published, I emphasized the pedagogical relevance of this project in making different cultures accessible.

Since 2012, it applied this methodology to several social reading projects focusing on different books belonging to the Italian literary canon. Among them, I focused on the projects who aimed to read and comment on Cesare Pavese's "La luna e i falò"; Italo Calvino "Le città invisibili"; Pier Paolo Pasolini's "Scritti corsari"; and Alessandro Manzoni's "I promessi sposi". By analyzing some of the tweets written during these projects, I emphasized that they can be studied by following the reception theory of the text. Each readers has a specific reception, which receives a written expression as a tweet that reshape the content of the text according to the reader's perception.

Considered this scenario, many pedagogical experiments have been developed in the last years to test the utility of the employment of social networks in school. In particular, many of them–for different reason, above all for its immediacy and the 140 characters’synthesis imposed to the tweets –have chosen to employ Twitter. In my paper, I have analyzedthe result of an experimentwhich took advantage of Twitter’s peculiarities in order to improve writing and literary skills of undergraduate students, providing them a new instrument which foster their competence as a foreign language (Italian) students. During theFall 2015 semester, I co-taughtwith prof. Colleen Ryan the Italian theater workshop classat Indiana University, Bloomington, focused on the Italian theater from itsorigin during Renaissance untilthe 20thcentury. During the semester,we proposed students to write theirown“tweetdiari”(tweet-diaries), texts as long as tweets to submit on paper every week. The experiment allowed us to test their grammar and literary proficiency, and provide students with a useful tool to improve their own Italian language proficiency.

Participants maintain the chapters’ sequence because the re-writing of every chapter is marked by an hashtag associated with the chapter’s number. In this way, a community of people reads together – experimenting with social reading – and the participants become authors. Tweets are second-hand comments (summary, paraphrases) or new original content (intertextuality, connection with media and arts, other languages), that users assemble to create new digital books (Tweetbook). Digital space enables a direct contact between readers and book content, that has to be manipulated to fit in the 140 characters’ limit imposed by Twitter: studying the strategies used to transfer a literary content into a medium conceived for brief communication, we could understand how the digital can modify the reception of literary content.

Deconstructing the Model in 20th and 21st-Century Italian Experimental Writings, 2019

SIC employed 115 writers to write the novel. In territorio nemico is a reaction to – and a redefinition of – the concept of Realism, as developed by Italian literature during the 20th century. Like Umberto Eco’s Il nome della Rosa, it is a historical novel that represents historical facts in an innovative way. Like Wu Ming’s books, it is written by a group of authors and it experiments with the traditional rules of the historical novel. Finally, the writing methodology employed is defined as industrial, a term that refers to the theorization expressed by Vittorini and Calvino in the 1960s: to change with times, literature needed to employ industrial methodologies, Calvino and Vittorini wrote. For SIC, instead, it has to adopt the dynamics developed by the Internet (openness, collective participation, redefinition of the role of author and reader). The novel represents a clear example of experimental writing, in its style, content, and writing. I would like to analyze the most innovative elements of its composition, style, and content to demonstrate how it deals with more traditional literary approaches in order to redefine them.

The aim of my research was to understand how people behave when required to think how to insert literature and other artistic contents into their tweets; it was also aimed to understand if the literary/artistic content is maintained by tweets or not.
My review to prof. Baron's essay, focused on the new approach to reading offered by digital devices and to the consequence it has on readers and writing.

This intervention analyzes two Digital Social Reading projects organized on Twitter in 2012 and 2013, following the so-called twitteratura method and focused on Cesare Pavese' "La luna e i falò" and "Dialoghi con Leucò". By analyzing some of the tweets published during these projects, this paper aims to demonstrate how these projects express an active reception of the literary text. For this reason, they can be considered as material demonstration of the reception theory of the literary text as developed by Wolfgang Iser, who labeled it "reader-response criticism".
