L'ATALANTE N.22 by Carolina Martinez
maîtres fous (1955) and Maya Deren’s Haitian film footage (1947-
54), two almost contemporaneous projects involving the filming of
possession dances – of the African Songhay in Rouch’s case, and
of the Haitian Voudoun cult in the case of Deren. Both filmmakers
were pioneers who took an innovative approach in their filming
of these ceremonies, using lightweight technical equipment and
involving themselves directly in the ritual (each in a different
way), to produce a respectful and poetic representation that was
free of the prejudices and the colonial superiority prevalent among
Western filmmakers until that time. While Deren was unable
to give her material a final form due to a plethora of ethical and
cinematographic obstacles, Rouch would successfully bring
ethnography and cinema together in his work, thereby establishing
a new documentary sub-genre, known as ethnofiction.

This article is part of a broader investigation that seeks to build bridges between the scenic and cinematographic forms of the past and the present using a post-cinematic and post-dramatic look around the concept of the virtual. Due to the breadth of the so- called “expanded cinema” and the blurriness of its limits, we will not seek here to make a catalog of it, but rather we will open the door to reflection on it through some key ideas and paradigmatic examples ranging from pre-cinematic experiences to the American avant-garde experiments of the 1960s. Regardless of the technology and the supports used, what interests us are the experiences that these works generate and their effects both on an aesthetic and phenomenological level as well as on a social and political level. From here we will develop a common thread around the possible virtual scenographies created in these proposals, and which, like an invisible spider web, would begin in the creator and end up being configured in the spectators, with the ultimate vocation of extending into the outside world and pointing to a new human ecology.

This article presents a pedagogical and research proposal in Performing Arts university studies based on theoretical analysis, and on physical, intellectual and emotional experience of scenic creative processes. Throughout it, we will see MARTÍNEZ-LÓPEZ / Una experiencia encarnada de investigación escénica en estudios teatrales universitarios 116-132 http://dx.

This article focuses on the representation and multiplication of identity in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, and Maya Deren's so-called “Selfrepresentation trilogy.” After the initial cinematographic analysis this text compares the representation of identity by deploying theories from literature, aesthetics and cinema, regarding the perception and representation of the limits of the self. We conclude that the respective representations can be ascribed to different theories of contemporary thought on the perception of complex identities. Both films can be described as "polyphonic narrations" carried out by a multiple subject that inhabits a context of multiple realities in line with the two realities posed by phenomenology, the worlds between which Lynch and Deren inhabit.

The work of the British artist Celia Pym can be approached from different topics, many of them linked to craftivism, such as relational practices, art in the public space, sustainability, care for the environment,
consumption habits or fashion ethics. But the essential question of her work, which will be the center of this interview as well as its guiding thread, especially revolves around the triangular relationship among cloth, body and memory: the traces of the bodies in the garments and their history through them, the reconstruction of what is missing in the fabric, the parallelism that for the artist has the fact of taking care of a body and taking care of a garment (with the corresponding relationship between the skin and the fabric), and what it means for her to put her body physically in her actions. All this will try to elucidate if the result of her work, consisting on researching and repairing the damaged cloth by the use of the bodies, could represent an anachronistic and anti-official history, a kind of artistic ethnography, where to perceive the overlapping of the lives of the garments, their wearers, their makers and their repairers. An embodied history born out a triple relationship and triple contact “with matter, with flesh, with disappearance” (Semin & Huberman, 1997: 11).
