We have interviewed four people who have first-hand knowledge of its activities and acquired some images of looted objects and Da’esh administrative documents. We examine this new evidence in the context of previously reported accounts of Da’esh involvement with the antiquities trade. We also report looting at some previously unknown archaeological sites, describe extensive looting when northeastern Syria was controlled by the Free Syrian Army, and critically examine the reliability of prices reported inside Syria.

To this day, countries in conflict in the region have also experienced unprecedented instability in the area, which is having effects on a global scale and whose importance and influence in many cases are difficult to predict. Needless to say, such conflicts have also caused severe damage to the heritage of the affected countries. In an effort to mitigate such damage towards heritage in these countries, this chapter will examine the work of Non-Governmental Organization Heritage for Peace (HfP) in protecting cultural heritage at different levels (international, Islamic and domestic law), by showing how important is the role of civil society regarding the applicability of international law for the protection of cultural heritage. The chapter will present different examples carried on by HfP through a vast network of collaborations among the civil society in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Libya.

The pandemic is adding to already existing problems in societies, which, under these circumstances, are becoming more visible. Countries in conflict have to deal with a double crisis: Conflict and the COVID-19 pandemic. Heritage for Peace drew up guidelines for the heritage sector in times of the COVID-19 pandemic for Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Yemen, all countries suffering from a violent conflict. Except for the country overviews the guidelines include chapters on Archaeological sites, Libraries and Archives, Museums and Basic Digital Tools. The chapters offer practical solutions, means to cooperate inside and outside the country, offer many resources and how to use digital tools.
