2023-10-26Add trailing commas to enum definitionsPeter Eisentraut
Since C99, there can be a trailing comma after the last value in an enum definition. A lot of new code has been introducing this style on the fly. Some new patches are now taking an inconsistent approach to this. Some add the last comma on the fly if they add a new last value, some are trying to preserve the existing style in each place, some are even dropping the last comma if there was one. We could nudge this all in a consistent direction if we just add the trailing commas everywhere once. I omitted a few places where there was a fixed "last" value that will always stay last. I also skipped the header files of libpq and ecpg, in case people want to use those with older compilers. There were also a small number of cases where the enum type wasn't used anywhere (but the enum values were), which ended up confusing pgindent a bit, so I left those alone. Run pgindent, pgperltidy, and reformat-dat-files. This set of diffs is a bit larger than typical. We've updated to pg_bsd_indent 2.1.2, which properly indents variable declarations that have multi-line initialization expressions (the continuation lines are now indented one tab stop). We've also updated to perltidy version 20230309 and changed some of its settings, which reduces its desire to add whitespace to lines to make assignments etc. line up. 2023-04-19Fix wal_consistency_checking enhanced desc output.Peter Geoghegan
Recent enhancements to rmgr desc routines that made the output summarize certain block data (added by commits 7d8219a4 and 1c453cfd) dealt with records that lack relevant block data (and so have nothing to give a more detailed summary of) by testing !DecodedBkpBlock.has_image. As a result, more detailed descriptions of block data were not output when wal_consistency_checking was enabled. This bug affected records with summarizable block data that also happened to have an FPI that the REDO routine isn't supposed to apply (FPIs used for consistency checking purposes only). The presence of such an FPI was incorrectly taken to indicate the absence of block data. To fix, test DecodedBkpBlock.has_data, not !DecodedBkpBlock.has_image. This is the exact condition that we care about, not an inexact proxy. 2022-09-29Restore pg_pread and friends.Thomas Munro
Commits cf112c12 and a0dc8271 were a little too hasty in getting rid of the pg_ prefixes where we use pread(), pwrite() and vectored variants. We dropped support for ancient Unixes where we needed to use lseek() to implement replacements for those, but it turns out that Windows also changes the current position even when you pass in an offset to ReadFile() and WriteFile() if the file handle is synchronous, despite its documentation saying otherwise. Switching to asynchronous file handles would fix that, but have other complications. For now let's just put back the pg_ prefix and add some comments to highlight the non-standard side-effect, which we can now describe as Windows-only. 2022-09-08Fix recovery_prefetch with low maintenance_io_concurrency.Thomas Munro
We should process completed IOs *before* trying to start more, so that it is always possible to decode one more record when the decoded record queue is empty, even if maintenance_io_concurrency is set so low that a single earlier WAL record might have saturated the IO queue. That bug was hidden because the effect of maintenance_io_concurrency was arbitrarily clamped to be at least 2. Fix the ordering, and also remove that clamp. We need a special case for 0, which is now treated the same as recovery_prefetch=off, but otherwise the number is used directly. This allows for testing with 1, which would have made the problem obvious in simple test scenarios. Also add an explicit error message for missing contrecords. It was a bit strange that we didn't report an error already, and became a latent bug with prefetching, since the internal state that tracks aborted contrecords would not survive retrying, as revealed by 026_overwrite_contrecord.pl with this adjustment. 2022-09-03Fix cache invalidation bug in recovery_prefetch.Thomas Munro
XLogPageRead() can retry internally after a pread() system call has succeeded, in the case of short reads, and page validation failures while in standby mode (see commit 0668719801). Due to an oversight in commit 3f1ce973, these cases could leave stale data in the internal cache of xlogreader.c without marking it invalid. The main defense against stale cached data on failure to read a page was in the error handling path of the calling function ReadPageInternal(), but that wasn't quite enough for errors handled internally by XLogPageRead()'s retry loop if we then exited with XLREAD_WOULDBLOCK. 1. ReadPageInternal() now marks the cache invalid before calling the page_read callback, by setting state->readLen to 0. It'll be set to a non-zero value only after a successful read. It'll stay valid as long as the caller requests data in the cached range. 2. XLogPageRead() no long performs internal retries while reading ahead. While such retries should work, the general philosophy is that we should give up prefetching if anything unusual happens so we can handle it when recovery catches up, to reduce the complexity of the system. Let's do that here too. 3. While here, a new function XLogReaderResetError() improves the separation between xlogrecovery.c and xlogreader.c, where the former previously clobbered the latter's internal error buffer directly. The new function makes this more explicit, and also clears a related flag, without which a standby would needlessly retry in the outer function. Thanks to Noah Misch for tracking down the conditions required for a rare build farm failure in src/bin/pg_ctl/t/003_promote.pl, and providing a reproducer. Back-patch to 15. 2022-08-04Remove dead pread and pwrite replacement code.Thomas Munro
pread() and pwrite() are in SUSv2, and all targeted Unix systems have them. Previously, we defined pg_pread and pg_pwrite to emulate these function with lseek() on old Unixen. The names with a pg_ prefix were a reminder of a portability hazard: they might change the current file position. That hazard is gone, so we can drop the prefixes. Since the remaining replacement code is Windows-only, move it into src/port/win32p{read,write}.c, and move the declarations into src/include/port/win32_port.h. No need for vestigial HAVE_PREAD, HAVE_PWRITE macros as they were only used for declarations in port.h which have now moved into win32_port.h. 2022-07-06Change internal RelFileNode references to RelFileNumber or RelFileLocator.Robert Haas
We have been using the term RelFileNode to refer to either (1) the integer that is used to name the sequence of files for a certain relation within the directory set aside for that tablespace/database combination; or (2) that value plus the OIDs of the tablespace and database; or occasionally (3) the whole series of files created for a relation based on those values. Using the same name for more than one thing is confusing. Replace RelFileNode with RelFileNumber when we're talking about just the single number, i.e. (1) from above, and with RelFileLocator when we're talking about all the things that are needed to locate a relation's files on disk, i.e. (2) from above. In the places where we refer to (3) as a relfilenode, instead refer to "relation storage". Since there is a ton of SQL code in the world that knows about pg_class.relfilenode, don't change the name of that column, or of other SQL-facing things that derive their name from it. On the other hand, do adjust closely-related internal terminology. For example, the structure member names dbNode and spcNode appear to be derived from the fact that the structure itself was called RelFileNode, so change those to dbOid and spcOid. Likewise, various variables with names like rnode and relnode get renamed appropriately, according to how they're being used in context. Hopefully, this is clearer than before. It is also preparation for future patches that intend to widen the relfilenumber fields from its current width of 32 bits. Variables that store a relfilenumber are now declared as type RelFileNumber rather than type Oid; right now, these are the same, but that can now more easily be changed. 2022-04-11Make XLogRecGetBlockTag() throw error if there's no such block.Tom Lane
All but a few existing callers assume without checking that this function succeeds. While it probably will, that's a poor excuse for not checking. Let's make it return void and instead throw an error if it doesn't find the block reference. Callers that actually need to handle the no-such-block case must now use the underlying function XLogRecGetBlockTagExtended. In addition to being a bit less error-prone, this should also serve to suppress some Coverity complaints about XLogRecGetBlockRefInfo. While at it, clean up some inconsistency about use of the XLogRecHasBlockRef macro: make XLogRecGetBlockTagExtended use that instead of open-coding the same condition, and avoid calling XLogRecHasBlockRef twice in relevant code paths. (That is, calling XLogRecHasBlockRef followed by XLogRecGetBlockTag is now deprecated: use XLogRecGetBlockTagExtended instead.) 2022-04-07Prefetch data referenced by the WAL, take II.Thomas Munro
Introduce a new GUC recovery_prefetch. When enabled, look ahead in the WAL and try to initiate asynchronous reading of referenced data blocks that are not yet cached in our buffer pool. For now, this is done with posix_fadvise(), which has several caveats. Since not all OSes have that system call, "try" is provided so that it can be enabled where available. Better mechanisms for asynchronous I/O are possible in later work. Set to "try" for now for test coverage. Default setting to be finalized before release. The GUC wal_decode_buffer_size limits the distance we can look ahead in bytes of decoded data. The existing GUC maintenance_io_concurrency is used to limit the number of concurrent I/Os allowed, based on pessimistic heuristics used to infer that I/Os have begun and completed. We'll also not look more than maintenance_io_concurrency * 4 block references ahead. Teach xlogreader.c to decode the WAL into a circular buffer. This will support optimizations based on looking ahead, to follow in a later commit. * XLogReadRecord() works as before, decoding records one by one, and allowing them to be examined via the traditional XLogRecGetXXX() macros and certain traditional members like xlogreader->ReadRecPtr. * An alternative new interface XLogReadAhead()/XLogNextRecord() is added that returns pointers to DecodedXLogRecord objects so that it's now possible to look ahead in the WAL stream while replaying. * In order to be able to use the new interface effectively while streaming data, support is added for the page_read() callback to respond to a new nonblocking mode with XLREAD_WOULDBLOCK instead of waiting for more data to arrive. No direct user of the new interface is included in this commit, though XLogReadRecord() uses it internally. Existing code doesn't need to change, except in a few places where it was accessing reader internals directly and now needs to go through accessor macros. 2021-09-29Fix WAL replay in presence of an incomplete recordAlvaro Herrera
Physical replication always ships WAL segment files to replicas once they are complete. This is a problem if one WAL record is split across a segment boundary and the primary server crashes before writing down the segment with the next portion of the WAL record: WAL writing after crash recovery would happily resume at the point where the broken record started, overwriting that record ... but any standby or backup may have already received a copy of that segment, and they are not rewinding. This causes standbys to stop following the primary after the latter crashes: LOG: invalid contrecord length 7262 at A8/D9FFFBC8 because the standby is still trying to read the continuation record (contrecord) for the original long WAL record, but it is not there and it will never be. A workaround is to stop the replica, delete the WAL file, and restart it -- at which point a fresh copy is brought over from the primary. But that's pretty labor intensive, and I bet many users would just give up and re-clone the standby instead. A fix for this problem was already attempted in commit 515e3d84a0b5, but it only addressed the case for the scenario of WAL archiving, so streaming replication would still be a problem (as well as other things such as taking a filesystem-level backup while the server is down after having crashed), and it had performance scalability problems too; so it had to be reverted. This commit fixes the problem using an approach suggested by Andres Freund, whereby the initial portion(s) of the split-up WAL record are kept, and a special type of WAL record is written where the contrecord was lost, so that WAL replay in the replica knows to skip the broken parts. With this approach, we can continue to stream/archive segment files as soon as they are complete, and replay of the broken records will proceed across the crash point without a hitch. Because a new type of WAL record is added, users should be careful to upgrade standbys first, primaries later. Otherwise they risk the standby being unable to start if the primary happens to write such a record. A new TAP test that exercises this is added, but the portability of it is yet to be seen. This has been wrong since the introduction of physical replication, so backpatch all the way back. In stable branches, keep the new XLogReaderState members at the end of the struct, to avoid an ABI break. Commit f003d9f87 left this macro with inadequate (or, one could say, too much) parenthesization. Which was catastrophic to the correctness of calls such as "if (!XLogRecHasBlockRef(record, 1)) ...". There are only a few of those, which perhaps explains why we didn't notice immediately (with our general weakness of WAL replay testing being another factor). Teach xlogreader.c to decode its output into a circular buffer, to support optimizations based on looking ahead. * XLogReadRecord() works as before, consuming records one by one, and allowing them to be examined via the traditional XLogRecGetXXX() macros. * An alternative new interface XLogNextRecord() is added that returns pointers to DecodedXLogRecord structs that can be examined directly. * XLogReadAhead() provides a second cursor that lets you see further ahead, as long as data is available and there is enough space in the decoding buffer. This returns DecodedXLogRecord pointers to the caller, but also adds them to a queue of records that will later be consumed by XLogNextRecord()/XLogReadRecord(). The buffer's size is controlled with wal_decode_buffer_size. The buffer could potentially be placed into shared memory, for future projects. Large records that don't fit in the circular buffer are called "oversized" and allocated separately with palloc(). Previously, the XLogReader module would fetch new input data using a callback function. Redesign the interface so that it tells the caller to insert more data with a special return value instead. This API suits later patches for prefetching, encryption and maybe other future projects that would otherwise require continually extending the callback interface. The logical decoding infrastructure needs to know which top-level transaction the subxact belongs to, in order to decode all the changes. Until now that might be delayed until commit, due to the caching (GPROC_MAX_CACHED_SUBXIDS), preventing features requiring incremental decoding. So we also write the assignment info into WAL immediately, as part of the next WAL record (to minimize overhead) only when wal_level=logical. We can not remove the existing XLOG_XACT_ASSIGNMENT WAL as that is required for avoiding overflow in the hot standby snapshot. Bump XLOG_PAGE_MAGIC, since this introduces XLR_BLOCK_ID_TOPLEVEL_XID. 2020-06-08Fix crash in WAL sender when starting physical replicationMichael Paquier
Since database connections can be used with WAL senders in 9.4, it is possible to use physical replication. This commit fixes a crash when starting physical replication with a WAL sender using a database connection, caused by the refactoring done in 850196b. There have been discussions about forbidding the use of physical replication in a database connection, but this is left for later, taking care only of the crash new to 13. While on it, add a test to check for a failure when attempting logical replication if the WAL sender does not have a database connection. This part is extracted from a larger patch by Kyotaro Horiguchi. This replaces the existing globals sendSeg and sendCxt. * Change WALRead not to receive XLogReaderState->seg and ->segcxt as separate arguments anymore; just use the ones from 'state'. This is made possible by the above change. * have the XLogReader segment_open contract require the callbacks to install the file descriptor in the state struct themselves instead of returning it. xlogreader was already ignoring any possible failed return from the callbacks, relying solely on them never returning. (This point is not altogether excellent, as it means the callbacks have to know more of XLogReaderState; but to really improve on that we would have to pass back error info from the callbacks to xlogreader. And the complexity would not be saved but instead just transferred to the callers of WALRead, which would have to learn how to throw errors from the open_segment callback in addition of, as currently, from pg_pread.) * segment_open no longer receives the 'segcxt' as a separate argument, since it's part of the XLogReaderState argument. Code review for 0dc8ead46363, prompted by a bug closed by 91c40548d5f7. XLogReader's system for opening and closing segments had gotten too complicated, with callbacks being passed at both the XLogReaderAllocate level (read_page) as well as at the WALRead level (segment_open). This was confusing and hard to follow, so restructure things so that these callbacks are passed together at XLogReaderAllocate time, and add another callback to the set (segment_close) to make it a coherent whole. Also, ensure XLogReaderState is an argument to all the callbacks, so that they can grab at the ->private data if necessary. Document the whole arrangement more clearly. 2020-01-26Refactor XLogReadRecord(), adding XLogBeginRead() function.Heikki Linnakangas
The signature of XLogReadRecord() required the caller to pass the starting WAL position as argument, or InvalidXLogRecPtr to continue reading at the end of previous record. That's slightly awkward to the callers, as most of them don't want to randomly jump around in the WAL stream, but start reading at one position and then read everything from that point onwards. Remove the 'RecPtr' argument and add a new function XLogBeginRead() to specify the starting position instead. That's more convenient for the callers. Also, xlogreader holds state that is reset when you change the starting position, so having a separate function for doing that feels like a more natural fit. This changes XLogFindNextRecord() function so that it doesn't reset the xlogreader's state to what it was before the call anymore. Instead, it positions the xlogreader to the found record, like XLogBeginRead(). 2019-11-25Refactor WAL file-reading code into WALRead()Alvaro Herrera
XLogReader, walsender and pg_waldump all had their own routines to read data from WAL files to memory, with slightly different approaches according to the particular conditions of each environment. There's a lot of commonality, so we can refactor that into a single routine WALRead in XLogReader, and move the differences to a separate (simpler) callback that just opens the next WAL-segment. This results in a clearer (ahem) code flow. The error reporting needs are covered by filling in a new error-info struct, WALReadError, and it's the caller's responsibility to act on it. The backend has WALReadRaiseError() to do so. We no longer ever need to seek in this interface; switch to using pg_pread(). This led to some untidy code. Make it prettier by creating two additional supporting structs, WALSegmentContext and WALOpenSegment which keep track of WAL-reading state. This makes code cleaner, as well as supports more future cleanup. In general we can't do that safely, but during replay we can because we know that nextFullXid can't advance concurrently. Perhaps in future it will be possible to extract the value entirely from independent WAL records, and then this restriction can be lifted. If a continuation record is split so that its first half has already been removed from the master, and is only present in pg_wal, and there is a recycled WAL segment in the standby server that looks like it would contain the second half, recovery would get stuck. The code in XLogPageRead() incorrectly started streaming at the beginning of the WAL record, even if we had already read the first page. Backpatch to 9.4. In principle, older versions have the same problem, but without replication slots, there was no straightforward mechanism to prevent the master from recycling old WAL that was still needed by standby. Without such a mechanism, I think it's reasonable to assume that there's enough slack in how many old segments are kept around to not run into this, or you have a WAL archive. For performance reasons a larger segment size than the default 16MB can be useful. A larger segment size has two main benefits: Firstly, in setups using archiving, it makes it easier to write scripts that can keep up with higher amounts of WAL, secondly, the WAL has to be written and synced to disk less frequently. But at the same time large segment size are disadvantageous for smaller databases. So far the segment size had to be configured at compile time, often making it unrealistic to choose one fitting to a particularly load. Therefore change it to a initdb time setting. This includes a breaking changes to the xlogreader.h API, which now requires the current segment size to be configured. For that and similar reasons a number of binaries had to be taught how to recognize the current segment size. Change pg_bsd_indent to follow upstream rules for placement of comments to the right of code, and remove pgindent hack that caused comments following #endif to not obey the general rule. Commit e3860ffa4dd0dad0dd9eea4be9cc1412373a8c89 wasn't actually using the published version of pg_bsd_indent, but a hacked-up version that tried to minimize the amount of movement of comments to the right of code. The situation of interest is where such a comment has to be moved to the right of its default placement at column 33 because there's code there. BSD indent has always moved right in units of tab stops in such cases --- but in the previous incarnation, indent was working in 8-space tab stops, while now it knows we use 4-space tabs. So the net result is that in about half the cases, such comments are placed one tab stop left of before. This is better all around: it leaves more room on the line for comment text, and it means that in such cases the comment uniformly starts at the next 4-space tab stop after the code, rather than sometimes one and sometimes two tabs after. Also, ensure that comments following #endif are indented the same as comments following other preprocessor commands such as #else. That inconsistency turns out to have been self-inflicted damage from a poorly-thought-through post-indent "fixup" in pgindent. This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects. The new indent version includes numerous fixes thanks to Piotr Stefaniak. The main changes visible in this commit are: * Nicer formatting of function-pointer declarations. * No longer unexpectedly removes spaces in expressions using casts, sizeof, or offsetof. * No longer wants to add a space in "struct structname *varname", as well as some similar cases for const- or volatile-qualified pointers. * Declarations using PG_USED_FOR_ASSERTS_ONLY are formatted more nicely. * Fixes bug where comments following declarations were sometimes placed with no space separating them from the code. * Fixes some odd decisions for comments following case labels. * Fixes some cases where comments following code were indented to less than the expected column 33. On the less good side, it now tends to put more whitespace around typedef names that are not listed in typedefs.list. This might encourage us to put more effort into typedef name collection; it's not really a bug in indent itself. There are more changes coming after this round, having to do with comment indentation and alignment of lines appearing within parentheses. I wanted to limit the size of the diffs to something that could be reviewed without one's eyes completely glazing over, so it seemed better to split up the changes as much as practical.
