2024-04-03Ensure that the sync slots reach a consistent state after promotion without ↵Amit Kapila
losing data. We were directly copying the LSN locations while syncing the slots on the standby. Now, it is possible that at some particular restart_lsn there are some running xacts, which means if we start reading the WAL from that location after promotion, we won't reach a consistent snapshot state at that point. However, on the primary, we would have already been in a consistent snapshot state at that restart_lsn so we would have just serialized the existing snapshot. To avoid this problem we will use the advance_slot functionality unless the snapshot already exists at the synced restart_lsn location. This will help us to ensure that snapbuilder/slot statuses are updated properly without generating any changes. Note that the synced slot will remain as RS_TEMPORARY till the decoding from corresponding restart_lsn can reach a consistent snapshot state after which they will be marked as RS_PERSISTENT. 2023-10-26Migrate logical slots to the new node during an upgrade.Amit Kapila
While reading information from the old cluster, a list of logical slots is fetched. At the later part of upgrading, pg_upgrade revisits the list and restores slots by executing pg_create_logical_replication_slot() on the new cluster. Migration of logical replication slots is only supported when the old cluster is version 17.0 or later. If the old node has invalid slots or slots with unconsumed WAL records, the pg_upgrade fails. These checks are needed to prevent data loss. The significant advantage of this commit is that it makes it easy to continue logical replication even after upgrading the publisher node. Previously, pg_upgrade allowed copying publications to a new node. With this patch, adjusting the connection string to the new publisher will cause the apply worker on the subscriber to connect to the new publisher automatically. This enables seamless continuation of logical replication, even after an upgrade. 2022-05-11Fix the logical replication timeout during large transactions.Amit Kapila
The problem is that we don't send keep-alive messages for a long time while processing large transactions during logical replication where we don't send any data of such transactions. This can happen when the table modified in the transaction is not published or because all the changes got filtered. We do try to send the keep_alive if necessary at the end of the transaction (via WalSndWriteData()) but by that time the subscriber-side can timeout and exit. To fix this we try to send the keepalive message if required after processing certain threshold of changes. 2022-03-30Skip empty transactions for logical replication.Amit Kapila
The current logical replication behavior is to send every transaction to subscriber even if the transaction is empty. This can happen because transaction doesn't contain changes from the selected publications or all the changes got filtered. It is a waste of CPU cycles and network bandwidth to build/transmit these empty transactions. This patch addresses the above problem by postponing the BEGIN message until the first change is sent. While processing a COMMIT message, if there was no other change for that transaction, do not send the COMMIT message. This allows us to skip sending BEGIN/COMMIT messages for empty transactions. When skipping empty transactions in synchronous replication mode, we send a keepalive message to avoid delaying such transactions. 2021-07-14Add support for prepared transactions to built-in logical replication.Amit Kapila
To add support for streaming transactions at prepare time into the built-in logical replication, we need to do the following things: * Modify the output plugin (pgoutput) to implement the new two-phase API callbacks, by leveraging the extended replication protocol. * Modify the replication apply worker, to properly handle two-phase transactions by replaying them on prepare. * Add a new SUBSCRIPTION option "two_phase" to allow users to enable two-phase transactions. We enable the two_phase once the initial data sync is over. We however must explicitly disable replication of two-phase transactions during replication slot creation, even if the plugin supports it. We don't need to replicate the changes accumulated during this phase, and moreover, we don't have a replication connection open so we don't know where to send the data anyway. The streaming option is not allowed with this new two_phase option. This can be done as a separate patch. We don't allow to toggle two_phase option of a subscription because it can lead to an inconsistent replica. For the same reason, we don't allow to refresh the publication once the two_phase is enabled for a subscription unless copy_data option is false. Previously, the XLogReader module would fetch new input data using a callback function. Redesign the interface so that it tells the caller to insert more data with a special return value instead. This API suits later patches for prefetching, encryption and maybe other future projects that would otherwise require continually extending the callback interface. As incidental cleanup work, move global variables readOff, readLen and readSegNo inside XlogReaderState. 2020-12-30Extend the output plugin API to allow decoding of prepared xacts.Amit Kapila
This adds six methods to the output plugin API, adding support for streaming changes of two-phase transactions at prepare time. * begin_prepare * filter_prepare * prepare * commit_prepared * rollback_prepared * stream_prepare Most of this is a simple extension of the existing methods, with the semantic difference that the transaction is not yet committed and maybe aborted later. Until now two-phase transactions were translated into regular transactions on the subscriber, and the GID was not forwarded to it. None of the two-phase commands were communicated to the subscriber. This patch provides the infrastructure for logical decoding plugins to be informed of two-phase commands Like PREPARE TRANSACTION, COMMIT PREPARED and ROLLBACK PREPARED commands with the corresponding GID. This also extends the 'test_decoding' plugin, implementing these new methods. This commit simply adds these new APIs and the upcoming patch to "allow the decoding at prepare time in ReorderBuffer" will use these APIs. 2020-08-08Implement streaming mode in ReorderBuffer.Amit Kapila
Instead of serializing the transaction to disk after reaching the logical_decoding_work_mem limit in memory, we consume the changes we have in memory and invoke stream API methods added by commit 45fdc9738b. However, sometimes if we have incomplete toast or speculative insert we spill to the disk because we can't generate the complete tuple and stream. And, as soon as we get the complete tuple we stream the transaction including the serialized changes. We can do this incremental processing thanks to having assignments (associating subxact with toplevel xacts) in WAL right away, and thanks to logging the invalidation messages at each command end. These features are added by commits 0bead9af48 and c55040ccd0 respectively. Now that we can stream in-progress transactions, the concurrent aborts may cause failures when the output plugin consults catalogs (both system and user-defined). We handle such failures by returning ERRCODE_TRANSACTION_ROLLBACK sqlerrcode from system table scan APIs to the backend or WALSender decoding a specific uncommitted transaction. The decoding logic on the receipt of such a sqlerrcode aborts the decoding of the current transaction and continue with the decoding of other transactions. We have ReorderBufferTXN pointer in each ReorderBufferChange by which we know which xact it belongs to. The output plugin can use this to decide which changes to discard in case of stream_abort_cb (e.g. when a subxact gets discarded). We also provide a new option via SQL APIs to fetch the changes being streamed. Code review for 0dc8ead46363, prompted by a bug closed by 91c40548d5f7. XLogReader's system for opening and closing segments had gotten too complicated, with callbacks being passed at both the XLogReaderAllocate level (read_page) as well as at the WALRead level (segment_open). This was confusing and hard to follow, so restructure things so that these callbacks are passed together at XLogReaderAllocate time, and add another callback to the set (segment_close) to make it a coherent whole. Also, ensure XLogReaderState is an argument to all the callbacks, so that they can grab at the ->private data if necessary. Document the whole arrangement more clearly. Don't move parenthesized lines to the left, even if that means they flow past the right margin. By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding left parenthesis. However, traditionally, if that resulted in the continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin, then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin, if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of the current statement indent. That makes for a weird mix of indentations unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column limit. This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers. Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren. This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects. The new indent version includes numerous fixes thanks to Piotr Stefaniak. The main changes visible in this commit are: * Nicer formatting of function-pointer declarations. * No longer unexpectedly removes spaces in expressions using casts, sizeof, or offsetof. * No longer wants to add a space in "struct structname *varname", as well as some similar cases for const- or volatile-qualified pointers. * Declarations using PG_USED_FOR_ASSERTS_ONLY are formatted more nicely. * Fixes bug where comments following declarations were sometimes placed with no space separating them from the code. * Fixes some odd decisions for comments following case labels. * Fixes some cases where comments following code were indented to less than the expected column 33. On the less good side, it now tends to put more whitespace around typedef names that are not listed in typedefs.list. This might encourage us to put more effort into typedef name collection; it's not really a bug in indent itself. There are more changes coming after this round, having to do with comment indentation and alignment of lines appearing within parentheses. I wanted to limit the size of the diffs to something that could be reviewed without one's eyes completely glazing over, so it seemed better to split up the changes as much as practical. The logical decoding machinery already preserved all the required catalog tuples, which is sufficient in the course of normal logical decoding, but did not guarantee that non-catalog tuples were preserved during computation of the initial snapshot when creating a slot over the replication protocol. This could cause a corrupted initial snapshot being exported. The time window for issues is usually not terribly large, but on a busy server it's perfectly possible to it hit it. Ongoing decoding is not affected by this bug. To avoid increased overhead for the SQL API, only retain additional tuples when a logical slot is being created over the replication protocol. To do so this commit changes the signature of CreateInitDecodingContext(), but it seems unlikely that it's being used in an extension, so that's probably ok. In a drive-by fix, fix handling of ReplicationSlotsComputeRequiredXmin's already_locked argument, which should only apply to ProcArrayLock, not ReplicationSlotControlLock. 2017-03-23Replication lag tracking for walsendersSimon Riggs
Adds write_lag, flush_lag and replay_lag cols to pg_stat_replication. Implements a lag tracker module that reports the lag times based upon measurements of the time taken for recent WAL to be written, flushed and replayed and for the sender to hear about it. These times represent the commit lag that was (or would have been) introduced by each synchronous commit level, if the remote server was configured as a synchronous standby. For an asynchronous standby, the replay_lag column approximates the delay before recent transactions became visible to queries. If the standby server has entirely caught up with the sending server and there is no more WAL activity, the most recently measured lag times will continue to be displayed for a short time and then show NULL. Physical replication lag tracking is automatic. Logical replication tracking is possible but is the responsibility of the logical decoding plugin. Tracking is a private module operating within each walsender individually, with values reported to shared memory. Module not used outside of walsender. Design and code is good enough now to commit - kudos to the author. In many ways a difficult topic, with important and subtle behaviour so this shoudl be expected to generate discussion and multiple open items: Test now! Add functionality for a new subscription to copy the initial data in the tables and then sync with the ongoing apply process. For the copying, add a new internal COPY option to have the COPY source data provided by a callback function. The initial data copy works on the subscriber by receiving COPY data from the publisher and then providing it locally into a COPY that writes to the destination table. A WAL receiver can now execute full SQL commands. This is used here to obtain information about tables and publications. Several new options were added to CREATE and ALTER SUBSCRIPTION to control whether and when initial table syncing happens. Change pg_dump option --no-create-subscription-slots to --no-subscription-connect and use the new CREATE SUBSCRIPTION ... NOCONNECT option for that. When implementing a replication solution ontop of logical decoding, two related problems exist: * How to safely keep track of replication progress * How to change replication behavior, based on the origin of a row; e.g. to avoid loops in bi-directional replication setups The solution to these problems, as implemented here, consist out of three parts: 1) 'replication origins', which identify nodes in a replication setup. 2) 'replication progress tracking', which remembers, for each replication origin, how far replay has progressed in a efficient and crash safe manner. 3) The ability to filter out changes performed on the behest of a replication origin during logical decoding; this allows complex replication topologies. E.g. by filtering all replayed changes out. Most of this could also be implemented in "userspace", e.g. by inserting additional rows contain origin information, but that ends up being much less efficient and more complicated. We don't want to require various replication solutions to reimplement logic for this independently. The infrastructure is intended to be generic enough to be reusable. This infrastructure also replaces the 'nodeid' infrastructure of commit timestamps. It is intended to provide all the former capabilities, except that there's only 2^16 different origins; but now they integrate with logical decoding. Additionally more functionality is accessible via SQL. Since the commit timestamp infrastructure has also been introduced in 9.5 (commit 73c986add) changing the API is not a problem. For now the number of origins for which the replication progress can be tracked simultaneously is determined by the max_replication_slots GUC. That GUC is not a perfect match to configure this, but there doesn't seem to be sufficient reason to introduce a separate new one. Bumps both catversion and wal page magic. 2014-03-03Introduce logical decoding.Robert Haas
This feature, building on previous commits, allows the write-ahead log stream to be decoded into a series of logical changes; that is, inserts, updates, and deletes and the transactions which contain them. It is capable of handling decoding even across changes to the schema of the effected tables. The output format is controlled by a so-called "output plugin"; an example is included. To make use of this in a real replication system, the output plugin will need to be modified to produce output in the format appropriate to that system, and to perform filtering. Currently, information can be extracted from the logical decoding system only via SQL; future commits will add the ability to stream changes via walsender.
