2022-08-30Cleanup more code and comments related to Windows NT4 (XP days)Michael Paquier
All the code and comments cleaned up here is irrelevant since 495ed0e. Note that this removes an assumption that CreateRestrictedToken() may not exist, something that could have happened when running under Windows NT as the code stated. Rather than assuming that it may not exist, this causes pg_ctl to fail hard if the function cannot be loaded. 2020-01-30Clean up newlines following left parenthesesAlvaro Herrera
We used to strategically place newlines after some function call left parentheses to make pgindent move the argument list a few chars to the left, so that the whole line would fit under 80 chars. However, pgindent no longer does that, so the newlines just made the code vertically longer for no reason. Remove those newlines, and reflow some of those lines for some extra naturality. 2017-06-21Phase 3 of pgindent updates.Tom Lane
Don't move parenthesized lines to the left, even if that means they flow past the right margin. By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding left parenthesis. However, traditionally, if that resulted in the continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin, then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin, if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of the current statement indent. That makes for a weird mix of indentations unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column limit. This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers. Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren. This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects. 2017-06-21Initial pgindent run with pg_bsd_indent version 2.0.Tom Lane
The new indent version includes numerous fixes thanks to Piotr Stefaniak. The main changes visible in this commit are: * Nicer formatting of function-pointer declarations. * No longer unexpectedly removes spaces in expressions using casts, sizeof, or offsetof. * No longer wants to add a space in "struct structname *varname", as well as some similar cases for const- or volatile-qualified pointers. * Declarations using PG_USED_FOR_ASSERTS_ONLY are formatted more nicely. * Fixes bug where comments following declarations were sometimes placed with no space separating them from the code. * Fixes some odd decisions for comments following case labels. * Fixes some cases where comments following code were indented to less than the expected column 33. On the less good side, it now tends to put more whitespace around typedef names that are not listed in typedefs.list. This might encourage us to put more effort into typedef name collection; it's not really a bug in indent itself. There are more changes coming after this round, having to do with comment indentation and alignment of lines appearing within parentheses. I wanted to limit the size of the diffs to something that could be reviewed without one's eyes completely glazing over, so it seemed better to split up the changes as much as practical. 2015-03-26Tweak __attribute__-wrapping macros for better pgindent results.Tom Lane
This improves on commit bbfd7edae5aa5ad5553d3c7e102f2e450d4380d4 by making two simple changes: * pg_attribute_noreturn now takes parentheses, ie pg_attribute_noreturn(). Likewise pg_attribute_unused(), pg_attribute_packed(). This reduces pgindent's tendency to misformat declarations involving them. * attributes are now always attached to function declarations, not definitions. Previously some places were taking creative shortcuts, which were not merely candidates for bad misformatting by pgindent but often were outright wrong anyway. (It does little good to put a noreturn annotation where callers can't see it.) In any case, if we would like to believe that these macros can be used with non-gcc compilers, we should avoid gratuitous variance in usage patterns. I also went through and manually improved the formatting of a lot of declarations, and got rid of excessively repetitive (and now obsolete anyway) comments informing the reader what pg_attribute_printf is for.
2015-03-11Add macros wrapping all usage of gcc's __attribute__.Andres Freund
Until now __attribute__() was defined to be empty for all compilers but gcc. That's problematic because it prevents using it in other compilers; which is necessary e.g. for atomics portability. It's also just generally dubious to do so in a header as widely included as c.h. Instead add pg_attribute_format_arg, pg_attribute_printf, pg_attribute_noreturn macros which are implemented in the compilers that understand them. Also add pg_attribute_noreturn and pg_attribute_packed, but don't provide fallbacks, since they can affect functionality. This means that external code that, possibly unwittingly, relied on __attribute__ defined to be empty on !gcc compilers may now run into warnings or errors on those compilers. But there shouldn't be many occurances of that and it's hard to work around... Discussion: 54B58BA3.8040302@ohmu.fi Author: Oskari Saarenmaa, with some minor changes by me.

ws2_32 is the new version of the library that should be used, as it contains the require functionality from wsock32 as well as some more (which is why some binaries were already using ws2_32). Michael Paquier, reviewed by MauMau

2007-02-01Wording cleanup for error messages. Also change can't -> cannot.Bruce Momjian
Standard English uses "may", "can", and "might" in different ways: may - permission, "You may borrow my rake." can - ability, "I can lift that log." might - possibility, "It might rain today." Unfortunately, in conversational English, their use is often mixed, as in, "You may use this variable to do X", when in fact, "can" is a better choice. Similarly, "It may crash" is better stated, "It might crash".

2006-12-04Patch of Win32 Encoding problem for server messages usingBruce Momjian
FormatMessage() (This should have been in 8.2.0, patched to 8.2.X and HEAD): I think this problem to be complex.... http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-hackers/2006-11/msg00042.php FormatMessage of windows cannot consider the encoding of the database. However, I should try the solution now. It is necessary to clear the problem. Multi character-code exists together in message and log. It doesn't consider the data base encoding that the user intended.... The user in multi-byte country can try this. http://inet.winpg.jp/~saito/pg_bug/MessageCheck.c That is, it is likely to become it in this manner.(Japanese) http://inet.winpg.jp/~saito/pg_bug/FormatMessage998.png Hiroshi Saito

2004-08-29Update copyright to 2004.Bruce Momjian
2004-04-19* Most changes are to fix warnings issued when compiling win32Bruce Momjian
* removed a few redundant defines * get_user_name safe under win32 * rationalized pipe read EOF for win32 (UPDATED PATCH USED) * changed all backend instances of sleep() to pg_usleep - except for the SLEEP_ON_ASSERT in assert.c, as it would exceed a 32-bit long [Note to patcher: If a SLEEP_ON_ASSERT of 2000 seconds is acceptable, please replace with pg_usleep(2000000000L)] I added a comment to that part of the code: /* * It would be nice to use pg_usleep() here, but only does 2000 sec * or 33 minutes, which seems too short. */ sleep(1000000); Claudio Natoli
2004-02-02Briefly,Bruce Momjian
* configure + Makefile changes * shared memory attaching in EXEC_BACKEND case (+ minor fix for apparent cygwin bug under cygwin/EXEC_BACKEND case only) * PATH env var separator differences * missing win32 rand functions added * placeholder replacements for sync etc under port.h To those who are really interested, and there are a few of you: the attached patch + file will allow the source base to be compiled (and, for some definition, "run") under MingW, with the following caveats (I wanted to first properly fix all but the last of these, but y'all won't quit asking for a patch :-): * child death: SIGCHLD not yet sent, so as a minimum, you'll need to put in some sort of delay after StartupDatabase, and handle setting StartupPID to 0 etc (ie. the stuff the reaper() signal function is supposed to do) * dirmod.c: comment out the elog calls * dfmgr.c: some hackage required to substitute_libpath_macro * slru/xact.c: comment out the errno checking after the readdir (fixed by next version of MingW) Again, this is only if you *really* want to see postgres compile and start, and is a nice leg-up for working on the other Win32 TODO list items. Just don't expect too much else from it at this point... Claudio Natoli
