A novel scheme of subband adaptive array for multicode Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme has a flexible configuration which allows basestation to be able to dynamically adapt to multirate transmission requests from subscribers. It is shown that the novel scheme can effectively suppress multiple access interferences (MAI) by appropriately forming main beam toward the desired user while pointing beampattern nulls toward MAI sources. Moreover, the combination of the subband adaptive array with the so-called cyclic prefix spreading code CDMA is also proposed to mitigate multipath fading and maximize diversity gain in multipath fading environment.

Performance of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection is far below that of the maximum likelihood (ML) detection in a multiuser environment and decreases significantly as the number of co-channel users increases. In this paper, we propose a combined MMSE and ML multiuser detection scheme for space-time block coded (STBC) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (STBC-OFDM) which has improved performance but with low complexity. In particular, we propose a reduced complexity ML post-detection (ML-PDP) scheme which can correct erroneously estimated bits from the outputs of MMSE multiuser detection. The proposed ML-PDP scheme performs sequential search to detect a predefined number of bits with higher probability of error and then uses ML detection to correct them. Upon controlling the number of corrected bits it is possible to balance the system performance with complexity associated with the ML-PDP. We show that significant improvement can be achieved at the cost of only small additional complexity compared with the MMSE multiuser detection.

This paper presents the design of an ad hoc two-way two-hop relay network using physical-layer network coding (PNC) in which multiple antennas are used at all nodes. In the considered network, the Alamouti's space-time block code (STBC) is used for transmission while linear detection is used for signal recovery. In order to facilitate linear estimation, we develop an equivalent multiuser STBC model for the proposed network and design the sum-and-difference matrix which allows convenient combination of the transmitted symbols from the end nodes. In addition, a simple relay selection method based on minimum mean square error (MSE) is proposed for performance improvement. Simulation results show that the proposed network achieves diversity order 2 while requiring only polynomial complexity. Moreover, it is possible to achieve significant bit error rate (BER) performance improvement when the proposed relay selection algorithm is used.

In this paper, we propose a spatio-temporal equalizer for the space-time block coded transmission over the frequency selective fading channels with the presence of co-channel interference (CCI). The proposed equalizer, based on the tapped delay line adaptive array (TDLAA), performs signal equalization and CCI suppression simultaneously using the minimum mean square error (MMSE) method. It is to show that our scheme outperforms the previous two-stage combined adaptive antenna and delayed decision feedback sequence estimator (DDFSE) approach. We also show that performance can be further improved if the synchronization between the preceding and delayed paths is achieved.

In this letter, we propose a combined scheme of minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection and successive interference cancellation (SIC) for multiuser space-time block coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (STBC-OFDM) systems. With the same complexity order, the proposed scheme provides significant bit error rate (BER) performance improvement over the linear MMSE multiuser detector.

In this paper, a new MIMO antenna for ultra-wide band (UWB) applications is designed and proposed. The proposed MIMO antenna consists of two single UWB antenna elements, one acts as a magnetic dipole while the other as an electric one, to reduce mutual coupling. In order to reduce further the mutual coupling, a copper stub is used to isolate the two antenna elements. The designed MIMO UWB antenna provides a broad operating bandwidth from 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz, while achieving low mutual coupling and VSWR ≤ 2. Various performance characteristics of the antenna such as radiation patterns, VSWR, and the maximal gain are thoroughly investigated by simulations and experiments.

This paper presents the theoretical analysis of subband adaptive array combining cyclic prefix transmission scheme (SBAA-CP) in multipath fading environment. The exact expressions for optimal weights, array outputs and the output signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) are derived. The analysis shows that use of the cyclic prefix data transmission scheme can significantly improve the performance of subband adaptive array (SBAA). An example of implementing SBAA-CP as a software antenna is also presented.

In this paper, we consider an amplify-and-forward cooperative wireless network in which network nodes use multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial division multiplexing (SDM) to communicate with one another. We examine the problem of distributed cooperative relay selection and signal combining at the destination. First, we propose three distributed relay selection algorithms based on the maximum channel gains, the maximum harmonic mean of the channel gains, and the minimum mean squared error (MSE) of the signal estimation. Second, we propose a minimum mean square error (MMSE) signal combining scheme which jointly serves as the optimal signal combiner and interference canceler. It is shown that the MSE selection together with the MMSE combining achieves the maximal diversity gain. We also show that in MIMO-SDM cooperative networks increasing the number of candidate nodes does not help to improve the BER performance as opposed to the cooperative networks where each node is equipped with only single antenna. A practical approach to implementation of the combiner based on the current wireless access network protocols will also be presented.

Diversity transmission using space-time block coding (STBC) shows a degraded performance in frequency selective fading (FSF) channel. In this paper, assuming the CSI is unknown at both transmitter and receiver while a pilot signal is available during the training period, we propose a MIMO transmission scheme using STBC by adopting subband adaptive array (SBAA) processing. The receive signal is converted into the frequency-domain and adaptive processing is done at each subband. A novel construction of SBAA is introduced to process received signal based on STBC. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme has a better performance compare to conventional STBC, and has a better performance and less computational load compare to STBC-TDLAA.

Subband adaptive array (SBAA) has been realised as a promising method to perform space-time signal processing in mobile communications. Recently, several schemes of SBAA have been introduced. However, theoretical analysis of SBAA performance has been only limited to case of SBAA without using decimation. In this paper, we introduce a novel method to analyse the performance of SBAA using critical sampling with localised feedback scheme. We first provide a detailed analysis of the SBAA performance in the case of single path and multipath fading environment. The simulation results are then presented to verify the proposed method.

In this paper, we propose a multiuser detection (MUD) scheme for space-time block coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (STBC-OFDM) systems. We derive the optimum weight matrix used to decouple simultaneously signals from active multiple access users using the minimum mean square error (MMSE) multiuser detection method. The proposed scheme provides good performance over different models of the frequency selective fading channel. It is also to show that if the length of the cyclic prefix is larger than that of the channel, the performance of the detector depends on only the total energy extracted from multipath components but not the employed channel model, the number of multipath components or the delay of each multipath component.

This paper considers detection schemes for the combined space-time block coding and spatial multiplexing (STBC-SM) transmission systems. We propose a symbol detection scheme which allows to extend the limit on the number of transmit antennas imposed by the previous group detection scheme. The proposed scheme allows to double multiplexing gain as well as provides better bit error rate (BER) performance over the group detection scheme. It is shown that the proposed QR-SIC (combined QR-decomposition and successive interference cancellation) symbol detector provides good trade-off between the BER and computational complexity performance and, thus, is the most suitable detector for the combined STBC-SM system.

Recently, lattice reduction aided (LRA) detectors have been introduced into Vertical Bell-Labs Layered Space-Time (V-BLAST) systems to obtain nearly optimal bit error rate (BER) performance for only small additional complexity. In this paper, the layer error characteristics of LRA-V-BLAST detectors are investigated and compared with those of conventional V-BLAST ones. Two important conclusions are drawn for the LRA-V-BLAST detectors. First, the variation of their mean square error (MSE) within each detection iteration is not as large as in conventional V-BLAST detectors. Second, thanks to lattice reduction there exists an inherent sub-optimal detection order from the last to the first layer. These conclusions allow LRA-V-BLAST detectors to avoid optimal ordering to further reduce the complexity. LRA-V-BLAST detectors without optimal ordering are shown to obtain almost the same BER performance of LRA-V-BLAST detector with optimal ordering.
