Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Athletics Compliance

Welcome to Texas A&M University Corpus Christi's online web manual for all of our constituencies! 

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) is a NCAA Division I school participating in the Southland Conference.  The Athletic Compliance Office (ACO) manages the university's compliance programming to ensure that the university not only meets, but exceeds the NCAA's agreed upon expectations of maintaining institutional control and fulfilling all responsibilities to self-monitor.  The ACO has an reports directly to the university's Chief Compliance Officer and has a dotted reporting line to the Athletics Director.  This intentional structure is based on past NCAA major infraction history and provides both the autonomy and the support needed both from within the athletic department and outside of the athletic department to operate with integrity.  It is the mission of the ACO to not only ensure NCAA and Southland Conference expectations are met, but also to promote an atmosphere of compliance, winning, academic success and student-athlete welfare.  The expectations set forth upon every employee of the university are to operate with integrity towards the rules and regulations of the NCAA.  The NCAA rules are constantly changing and it is every employees and student-athletes responsibility to be mindful of change and embrace the opportunities to learn more about these changes.  It is a basic expectation that many staff members are well acquainted with the NCAA manual and are able to successfully use their expertise to place the university in not only a position of good standing in the moment, but also to be innovative and proactive towards the future.   

Institutional Control 

The responsibility to operate the University's athletics program in accordance with the principle of institutional control is a basic expectation of all members of the NCAA and Southland Conference. TAMUCC is committed to exercising institutional control through: 

·         Establishing and maintaining an atmosphere of compliance with all regulations; 

·         Employing responsible and ethical administrator and staff members; 

·         Educating coaches, staff, student-athletes, and boosters of their responsibilities with NCAA rules; 

·         Providing effective lines of communication between all constituencies;  

·         Developing compliance and monitoring systems throughout the university; and 

·         Empowering university offices such as the Registrar and Financial Aid to become subject matter experts in related NCAA bylaws and appropriately enforce such bylaws. 

Responsibility to Monitor 

A principle responsibility of a member NCAA institution is fulfilling a duty to monitor certain areas of the athletics program.  Effective monitoring of the athletics program through policies and procedures, most notably in the key areas of: 

·         Academic eligibility 

·         Academic integrity 

·         Admissions 

·         Amateurism 

·         Budget oversight 

·         Financial Aid 

·         Recruiting 

·         Reporting of violations 

·         Sportsmanship 

·         Student conduct administration 

Role of the Athletics Compliance Office  

The Athletics Compliance Office is the university's system to proactively avoid violations through education, to detect violations, advocate on behalf of the university in reporting and defending violations and ultimately ensuring and penalties handed down be the NCAA are enforced and followed.  The university's athletics compliance office will use a tiered approach in regards to adopting commonly accepted standards of operation amongst national peers.
