Prime Minister, John Howard promised to implement measures to stop the child sexual abuse in remote Indigenous communities across the Northern Territory. These measures include widespread alcohol bans on Aboriginal land, connecting school attendance to welfare payments and 'providing meals for children at the parent's cost', compulsory health checks. The role of one of the taskforce leaders, Sue Gordon, and the responses of the Indigenous community of Maningrida to issues including the dismantling of CDEP (the Commonwealth Development and Employment Program) and the removal of the permit system are discussed.
