Conciliation has not often been considered as a specific practice of colonisation or empire – building. It has rarely been recognized in indexes to the relevant literature in the same manner as other methods of imperial acquisition such as conquest and the ‘civilising mission’. Most discussions of this concept have tended to be momentary asides in the recounting of national histories; while the more detailed accounts have generally focused upon the difficult issue of the intent with which it was enacted. This paper is an introductory exploration into the meaning and practice of conciliation. It forms part of a larger study of the concept that endeavours to account for the practical aspects of its evolution and place it among the ‘proliferating practices’ of colonial governance while also detailing its intellectual history.
