Dr. Olena Babakova is a freelance journalist and political analyst. She received her MA in history at Taras Shevchenko National University in 2005 (prof. Vasyl Ulyanovsky class) Ph.D in history at Białystok University in 2015 (tutor prof. Teresa Chynczewska-Hennel). In 2011 – 2016 she served as an editor at Polish Radio External Service, after 2016 she is a permanent contributor to European Pravda (Kyiv, Ukraine), Krytyka Polityczna (Warsaw, Poland) web-portals. Her research interests include Polish-Ukrainian relations, politics of historical memory as well as Ukrainian migrations to the EU.

At the same time, the “ideal refugee” is supposed to be very similar to us, which would make it easier for us to empathise with them. We discuss the expectations of who “true refugees” are, as revealed in Poland with the reception of Ukrainians fleeing war, for “Spotlight” (6/41, 2022), published by the Center of Migration Research of the University of Warsaw.
