Multibeam satellite networks in Ka band have been designed to accommodate the increasing traffic ... more Multibeam satellite networks in Ka band have been designed to accommodate the increasing traffic demands expected in the future. However, these systems are spectrum limited due to the current spectrum allocation policies. This literature review presentation investigates the potential of applying cognitive radio techniques in satellite communications (SatCom) in order to increase the spectrum opportunities for future generations of satellite networks without interfering with the operation of incumbent services. These extra spectrum opportunities can potentially amount to 2.4 GHz of bandwidth in the downlink and 2 GHz of bandwidth in the uplink for high density fixed satellite services (HDFSS).

The paper presented in this presentation proposes a model-based range extension control system fo... more The paper presented in this presentation proposes a model-based range extension control system for electric vehicles. The proposed system optimizes the front and rear driving–braking force distributions by considering the slip ratio of the wheels and the motor loss. The optimal distribution depends solely on vehicle acceleration and velocity. Therefore, this system is effective not only at constant speeds but also in acceleration and deceleration modes. Bench tests were conducted for more precise evaluation and to realize experimental results with high reproducibility. The effectiveness of the proposed system was verified through field and bench tests.

A novel method for pediatric heart sounds segmentation by paying special attention to the physiological effects of respiration on pediatric heart sounds is proposed in this paper. The segmentation is accomplished in three steps. First, the envelope of a heart sounds signal is obtained with emphasis on the first heart sound (S1) and the second heart sound (S2) by using short time spectral energy and autoregressive (AR) parameters of the signal. Then, the basic heart sounds are extracted taking into account the repetitive and spectral characteristics of S1 and S2 sounds by using a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network classifier. In the final step, by considering the diastolic and systolic intervals variations due to the effect of a child’s respiration, a complete and precise heart sounds end-pointing and segmentation is achieved.

Scheduling and spectrum allocation are tasks affecting the performance of cognitive radio wireles... more Scheduling and spectrum allocation are tasks affecting the performance of cognitive radio wireless networks, where heterogeneity in channel availability limits the performance and poses a great challenge on protocol design. In this paper, they present a distributed algorithm for scheduling and spectrum allocation with the objective of maximizing the network’s throughout subject to a delay constraint. During each time slot, the scheduling and spectrum allocation problems involve selecting a subset of links to be activated, and based on spectrum sensing outcomes, allocate the available resources to these links. This problem is addressed as an aggregate utility maximization problem. Since the throughput of any data flow is limited by the throughput of the weakest link along its end-to-end path, the utility of each flow is chosen as a function of this weakest link’s throughput. The throughput and delay performance of the network are characterized using a queueing theoretic analysis, and throughput is maximized via the application of Lagrangian duality theory.

Comparison of three prevalent EE estimation methods and five body locations to provide a basis fo... more Comparison of three prevalent EE estimation methods and five body locations to provide a basis for selecting among methods, sensors number, and positioning are given. Also considering those three techniques. The latter two estimation methods utilize subsequent activity classification and EE estimation steps. Furthermore, analyzed accelerometer sensors number and on-body positioning to derive optimal EE estimation results during various daily activities. To evaluate the approach, implemented a study with 15 participants that wore five accelerometer sensors while performing a wide range of sedentary, household, lifestyle, and gym activities at different intensities. Indirect calorimetry was used in parallel to obtain EE reference data. Results show that activity-specific estimation methods using accelerometer features can outperform counts-based methods by 88% and activity-specific methods using METs lookup for active clusters by 23%. No differences were found between activity-specific methods using METs lookup and using accelerometer features for sedentary clusters.

By the shortage in the frequency spectrum, the coming period will request more information to be exchanged at unquestionably more speed. Furthermore, this will interest for the higher frequencies. Keeping in mind the end goal to exploit present day space communications innovation, acknowledgment of a household correspondence satellite framework with impressive communication limit at Ku–band is attainable. Climate is exceptionally unverifiable and labile hydrometeor activities make issue in a satellite communication. The real issue connected with the communication links at these high frequency radio waves is the rain attenuation estimation. In this paper, a performance analysis and simulation of rain attenuation models is shown for frequency range of 12–40 GHz over ESCL at real urban communities of India by considering information of NSS–6 satellite.

Several biometric based systems such as fingerprint and face recognition are used in various applications such as security devices and forensic identification. Human retina is one of the wellspring of biometric system which gives the most reliable and efficient method for authentication. Even in the medical science, ophthalmologist considers the changes in the retinal vessels as many retinal diseases are characterized by it. Retina feature extraction is a challenging task. In this paper, an easy and reliable method is proposed for retinal feature extraction. The concept of line tracking is used for the binarization of input retina image. A hybrid method of morphology and scanning window analysis (SWA) is applied for obtaining reliable result. Also, the validation of proposed method is checked against the database of 55 images of eyes with healthy, glaucomatous, and diabetic retinopathy.

A comparative analysis of rain attenuation estimation models at 12--40 GHz band over ESCL have been carried out at real urban communities of India by considering information of NSS-6 satellite. The conclusion is made at last considering different rain and cloud attenuation models, and the most reliable model has been considered for the satellite link budget computation.
