Jessica L Radin
I graduated with a BA from Earlham College, receiving a double major in Philosophy (Continental) and Sociology/Anthropology (with an emphasis on social theory.) I then moved to Damascus, Syria, for two years in order to learn Arabic. I studied Classical Arabic for two years, and during the second year began to study Arabic philosophy, specifically the Decisive Treatise of Ibn Rushd (Averroes).
While in Syria I applied to and was accepted for a terminal 2-year MA in Religious Studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. While my focus was on Judaism and Islam, I was also required to take comprehensive examinations in Hinduism and Buddhism to enable me to teach World Religions and a variety of other courses. My MA thesis focused on Leo Strauss’ interpretation of Ibn Rushd’s Decisive Treatise. I then moved to the University of Toronto to study for my PhD in the Department for the Study of Religion – my dissertation, defended in July 2018, examines the Arabic afterlife of Aristotle’s theory of the imagination.
Over the course of my time in Toronto, I have also worked for private refugee sponsorship groups and the Canadian refugee relief organization as an interpreter and translator (as well as a cultural interpreter and occasional bilingual duella). I have also spent two months as an interpreted for the European Union’s Asylum Support organization in the Moria refugee camp in Greece - I have also spent extended periods of time conducting research in England and the Middle East. I am on the job market, looking for full-time Or long-term positions either in academia or in another organization that will utilize my unique skills and potentially allow me to pursue my academic research interests at the same time.
Adventure is always welcome.
