Other relevant documents defining the relationship between the two archaeologists are also included (1920–1931). The exam of the correspondence, kept at Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in Rome, comprises a preface on the scientific collaboration and friendship between Ashby and Lugli, followed by some biographical notes and the investigation of the archival lifecycle of the documents. Finally, the text of each letter is transcribed with a brief intro-duction and commentary. This study sheds new light on the personal and professional relationship between two eminent scholars, offering new informa-tion on their studies, research interests, archaeological investigations, and scientific publications.

Even though the investigated area is rich in archaeological evidence and the seaport area is the most extensive, in the state-of-the-art, the last archaeological map was published in 1926. A century later, this publication, although extremely useful, has become part of the historical cartography, which no longer represents the reality of the current urban landscape, requiring for these reasons to be improved and updated, on account of landscape transformation and the progress of studies.
The objective of the work is to obtain a first comprehensive knowledge on the port of Terracina in the context of maritime, river and lake viability, which found their outlet in it. The aim is to build an unprecedented historical
and archaeological synthesis up to the present day, highlighting the shortcomings in studies and current problems to shed light on the shape, structure and functioning remains of the port system.

Indeed, the preceding acropolis, enclosed by the polygonal walls, must have been in the area of the former convent of San Francesco.

They shed light on the history and topography of the ancient city. They are evidence of a trade which grew in importance from the 180s BC onwards as the taste for Greek wine developed among Italic peoples. The amphoras they belonged to were not imported directly from Rhodes but through emporia in the Aegean and in Magna Graecia. From a topographical point of view, the stamps found in Terracina help us to better understand the urban and commercial development of the lower city from the first quarter of the 2nd century BC, a period in which the maritime and ports as well as the waterways which connected them, already constituted an alternative to the road system, whose main axis was Via Appia.

The symbols reproduced in the stamps often recall the markings of the monetary production, but the inter- pretation and definition of monetary ‘‘stamps’’ is doubtful. Recent studies suggest a tax or control function, read only by technical personnel, and not a guarantee for users. The analogy between coinage and stamping appears to be forced, since the types give authority to a coin through their repeated and exclusive use, while the stamps were not used by all the cities, they were multiple, and not applied to each amphora.

This paper mainly involves an unprecedented catalogue of sacred and funerary structures but also infrastructures such as aqueducts and pathways that were dug into the karst rocks between the middle of the Republican period and the beginning of the Empire. In all the previous research, the focus was only on the inscriptions engraved in the rock, but now also even anepigraphic structures carved in the rock have been studied as well.

The study starts from the archaeological survey to complete in comparative exegesis of archival and aerophotographic tools. Furthermore, by the use of input forms a GIS database has been populated with the collected data and integrated as expressed graphically in the archeological map. The territory of Fondi has historically suffered from a lack of systematic investigations, most of the information come from eighteenth and twentieth century. For this reason we have paid special attention to the analysis of the geomorphological and hydrographic aspects, to the comparison of the historic maps and archaeological aerial photos.

Il lavoro è nato da due progetti di ricerca: Death and Identity in Ostia: A study of funerary material and cutural diversity in the Port city of Rome e dal progetto The family back home: The unseen social network of roman harbour cities.

Enhanced by a considerable amount of excavation photos and graphs, with detailed drawings, site images and virtual models, the book succeeds in understanding the most important processes that formed the basis for new forms of expression of imperial Roman architecture in Mediterranean area, with particular attention to Rome itself and the peninsula.

It is one of the most interesting and articulated Etruscan rock tombs of the Hellenistic age known to us, whose architecture seems to be inspired by the monumental Macedonian palaces of Vergina and Pella.

The discovery site is located at the convergence between the main road network (Via Appia) and the fluvial one (riverport), closely connected to the large seaport. Several classes of heterogeneous material were found in the archaeological survey: these include fragments of transport amphorae, from the 2nd century B.C. to the 2nd century A.D. The attested amphorae consists of several fragments of Dressel 1A-C, and Lamboglia 2 but also sporadic fragments of Rhodian, Greek-Italic and Brindisi amphorae.

New unpublished documents are presented to clarify the vicissitudes, including the seizure of the mosaic and the request for a prize of discovery by the discoverer's family.

Investigations were conducted to the North of Acropolis area, towards the shore, where Porro unearthed the remains of Geometric tombs. Excavations were carried out on the opposite side of the acropolis to the South, where tombs dated to the 7th-6th century B.C. were located; excavations carried out in the area Pappatislures revealed traces of previous excavations. In KeKragi Porro found 15 rock-cut tombs, already completely looted. Tombs of the late Hellenistic period were located on the hill Katzupernos, and another necropolis from the same period was found in the village of Kalavarda. A Mycenaean tomb was found in Tzitzo (Kaminaki Lures).
Amongst the artefacts collected by Porro in 1914 during the survey and the archaeological excavations or purchased from the inhabitants, 600 Rhodian amphora stamps founded, represent one of the most important collections of stamps in the world, actually stored in the National Roman Museum. A preliminary publication of these stamps came out in 1916. More than one hundred years after the publication of the first epigraphic list and the first studies about rhodian amphora stamps, this new study is proposed with new and very different scientific theories and results. This thesis provide new readings, new datings and new illustrations of all the Rhodian stamps preserved at the Roman National Museum, and account for their dissemination in historical and geographical terms.
KEY WORDS: Rhodes, Kamiros, Amphora stamps
