Since the Maidan uprising in 2013/2014 and the subsequent attacks on the sovereignty and territory of Ukraine by Russia, there has been intense debate on how to interpret not only Ukraine’s dramatic present but also its complex and difficult past.

Through the remnants, pieces, scratches, even those that might seem unrecognizable, one can build their strength and gain a voice. Ukrainian art today is a profoundly engaged art. It also asks the viewer for the same dedication. To ask questions, search deeper, and finally - participate, through the bodily, tactile presence.

The article proposes the use of postcolonial theories, mainly based on the ideas of Frantz Fanon, Leela Gandhi, and Homi Bhabha, as a tool for a better understanding of the visual sphere of the Maidan revolution. It is based on the dualism between the anti-colonial and nationalist character, and the post-colonial, hybrid character, as well as the potential of civil society and new subjectivity.

Revolutionaries presented in this work demonstrate the highest level of trust in sharing their sleep with others. And more. It shows the very moment when protest slowly changes into revolution. It is a moment when people’s movement is no longer home–protest place–home. It is the moment when they decide to stay and fully devote themselves to the force of the revolution. It is this one step that changes everything.

The mechanism of forgetting about the Soviet past is particularly strong in Ukraine – forgetting through destruction, erasure and removal of all the physical remnants of the former system. Today, a war of remembrance is raging, as all Soviet monuments and other relics of Soviet history are destroyed. The future in Ukraine is to be constructed on the basis of a particular picture of the past. The fragment focuses on the artistic practice of Zhanna Kadyrova, and Nikita Kadan.

This study is based on the field observation conducted in 2014, shortly after the revolution has come to an end, and later in 2015 and 2016. The questions were if street art represents any common view on the revolution, what is the iconography and form, and what remained of street art after the end of Euromaidan?

Powstaje pytanie, czy mamy prawo do takiego odczytywania prac i narzucania artystom ról proroków? Czy nie dochodzi do instrumentalizacji sztuki i do narzucenia znaczeń, których pierwotnie nie było?

This arises from people’s beliefs and myths about art, concerning its uselessness, romanticism and idealism; from an understanding of the concept of work rooted in a capitalist perspective, according to which art functions as something “different” than and “external” to work; and from misunderstandings about what comprises the essence of an artist’s professional activity. Critics and art theorists speak about artists’ work, while artists themselves speak through their work (Oskar Dawicki, Michał Frydrych and Julia Curyło). In the conclusion, the concept of creative work is discussed by people not connected professionally with the art market, but who are its potential customers.

'Animals Who Ate Their Humans' questions what it means to die, be human, and experience war. Once dead, are we objects to be stuffed and hung on a mantlepiece, or are we sacred, to be left untouched? Are we, as humans, senseless killers or superior beings? What value do we and should we place on human and animal life? In this grotesque and surrealistic story, the human perspective is mixed with that of animals, the well-known world, although under fire, slowly disappears in the fumes of absurdity. The text questions the anthropocentric perspective and the right to decide the fate of other living creatures, as well as comments on the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war in Donbas.

The 7th volume of the annual is titled "20th-century Ukrainian Art and Polish-Ukrainian artistic relations". It contains articles that cover issues spanning the whole century and material from various fields of art: from Impressionist and Symbolist painting, Art Nouveau architecture, national trends in art and a quest for a new style, through avant-garde art of the 20th century and in emigration, through the realistic trends of the Socrealism to reach the art of the 1960s and 1970s, when the new oppositional trends emerged that included the artistic “underground” and expanded the art phenomena with the photographic experiments and use of the new media. The volume is edited by prof. Jerzy Malinowski, Ewa Sułek and Agnieszka Pospiszil and contains 31 articles by various authors.

Sztuka i kultura stanowią odzwierciedlenie postaw społecznych. Dlatego, obserwując działania artystyczne, możemy dowiedzieć się wiele na temat świadomości społeczeństwa ukraińskiego w czasach ogromnych przemian dotyczących istoty człowieka sowieckiego.
