What was Italian literature for a reader of the United States during the decades examined by "Transatlantic Transfers"? Archival documents and press materials show that the idea of a new Italian renaissance quickly became the main frame in the reception of Italian literary works in the United States. I will retrace the reception of new Italian fiction in the United States during the aftermath of World War Two from the vantage point of this term. American literati of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s understood the term renaissance as connected to a particular constellation of meanings, such as emerging to cultural maturity, affirming a nation's heritage in the realm of art and culture, and exercising literature as a democratic practice. Such meanings are specific to the US-American cultural system and had a distinct political connotation. At the same time, the vogue of Italian literature appears to be closely related with the coeval transatlantic consumerisms which are being investigated by the PRIN project "Transatlantic Transfers". Looking at this case study will allow to address questions that are topic-specific as well as methodological: how are we to understand the new framing of translated literature in its target cultural landscape? How can we ensure we understand the meanings this corpus takes on in its new context? And what kind of insight can this understanding afford us, as we examine the "Transatlantic Literary Networks" connecting Italy to the United States (1949-1972)?

Based on the findings of my postdoctoral research, I will present the stories of some important women mediators who had a decisive role in bringing Italian books to the US-American readership. Their work, in fact, received little scholarly attention so far. Through their cases, I will outline the multifaceted transatlantic networks that brought Italian fiction to the US-American readership, at a time in which the process of mediation, translation, and publication of foreign literary works progressively settled toward practices that would carry on for several decades.

In the light of critical points identified in the most recent American criticism, this analysis focusses on the meaning attributed to the translated novels, taking a synchronic approach. This article analyses paratexts and reviews to identify the key themes in the reception of Mafia Vendetta (1964), The Council of Egypt (1966), A Man’s Blessing (1968), Equal Danger (1973) and One Way or Another (1977). It is thus possible to determine the ways in which these works challenged the expectations and horizons of readers and reviewers, and the ways in which the works proved to be difficult to understand for those who did not know Leonardo Sciascia’s original cultural context.
Esaminando paratesti e recensioni il testo individua i temi centrali nella ricezione di Mafia Vendetta (1964), The Council of Egypt (1966), A Man’s Blessing (1968), Equal Danger (1973) e One Way or Another (1977).

The aim is to elucidate Ikeda’s vision of a new global civilization, and clarify the role of education in achieving this vision. Ikeda’s distinctive approach is characterized by a focus on inner change as the catalyst for societal, gradualist, non-violent change. Throughout the four decades during which Ikeda submitted his proposals (1983-2022), Ikeda articulated a coherent framework geared towards supporting the development of a pluralistic and peaceful society, based on reverence for the inherent dignity of life, inwhich individuals can thrive and dialogic relationships are cultivated across linguistic, cultural, and national boundaries.Intertextual discourse unfolding through Ikeda’s proposals brings together pressing geopolitical and social issues, recent and ancient philosophical and literary stimuli, nuclear weapons and the environmental crisis, and introduces concepts from the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, often articulated as concrete educational proposals and practices. This article retraces key concepts and arguments as leads for a dialogic reflection on what scholars, researchers, and practitioners of education can do to bring society “from a culture of war characterized by conflict and confrontation, to a culture of peace based on cooperation and creative coexistence”. After examining Ikeda’s critiqueof modern civilization with specific attention to implications for education, the article presents open questions and interim conclusions, considered in terms of the different facets of curriculum. In light of the cogency, timeliness, and relevance of Ikeda’s proposals, the article invites further research and suggests to include Ikeda’s proposals in higher education curricula pertaining to pedagogy, political science, sociology, geography, history, and philosophy.

Recent developments in scholarship have evidenced the essential role played by mediators, with ground-breaking studies on literary agents and other professionals. As the scholarly debate unfolds, new research perspectives come forward. A vast sector of publishing culture and women’s labour is yet to be examined as far as publishing is concerned: for the many professionals who are receiving scholarly attention, there are many more unresearched semi-professionals, non-professionals and temporary professionals. In order to explore the cultural contribution, career trajectories and working conditions of these individuals, I will present a number of women who were variously related to the same publishing house and worked on a specific corpus of texts: translated Italian literature published in the United States following the end of World War Two.

To unravel the complex, multi-layered processes of cultural translation at play in transatlantic transfers at the onset of the Cold War, this article explores the U.S.-American reception of Italian culture from the vantage point of translated fiction. Retracing the public discourse around new Italian books in the United States means to recognize the emergence of a new framing narrative, that of a novel Renaissance taking place in Italy after the end of the Fascist period. Understanding the concept of a new Renaissance from a transnational perspective, at a time in which the public discourse was being reorganized across all media in response to the new geopolitical order, allows us to identify the politics of newly translated Italian fiction in the U.S. I argue that, through its framing, Italian fiction was made an ally in the cultural Cold War, coming to represent Western democracy, freedom, and creativity.

In January 1974, Italy’s most widely circulated newspaper Corriere della Sera inaugurates a multi-author correspondence column, inviting readers to pro- pose «other and new topics, including personal ones». Goffredo Parise is among the authors involved, and develops, I argue, a particular form of collaborative writing, involving readers as writers. In such works, dialogic stimuli transcend barriers and hierarchies: readers become writers, each one with their style, and personal matters become the cradle of ideas. I will present and analyze these ex- perimental texts in the historical, cultural and social context of the time. Draw- ing from Michail Bachtin’s thought, I reflect theoretically on dialogic textual forms and the role of readers in literary innovation.

The collection opens by mourning the death of her mother, moves on to anguished memories of conflicted relations, and eventually attains a regenerated, lively and passionate new way of existence. We observe the manifold aspects of the poet's voice, and clarify the relation between sense and sensibility in her work. Her poems appear embedded in their object: neither spectator, nor protagonist, the poet involves the reader by observing herself as another. According to Insana, the antidote to lovelessness is to be found in reclaiming dialogue: value, sense and responsibility are real when we nurture relationship.

Some books met resounding success, and even came to epitomize Italy, as "The little world of Don Camillo" shows. While venturing into their new cultural context, literary works went through different sorts of alteration, involving the text, its exterior appearance, and its meaning. This presentation will focus on the interaction between these three levels, in relation to the coeval horizon of expectations of the general public in the United States.

Many of the women involved in publishing seem to undergo a fate which is similar to the needle: indispensable at first, their work gets easily overlooked and soon forgotten, despite its effect may be recorded and even studied extensively. My current research on the translation and reception of Italian novels in the United States after World War Two led to some of these women. They played different roles, yet they appear to share some features: the outcome of their work was significant, while their name is hardly mentioned in existing scolarship. Their activity is traceable only through archival research. I will present the cases of three women related to the publishing house I am currently working on: the firm founded by John Farrar and Roger Straus. Gioconda Savini, a secretary, Marianne Ceconi, a translator, and Sheila Cudahy, an editor, were involved in the transmission and translation of some of the most significant Italian titles of the postwar years. After framing their case in the coeval context, I will draw some conclusions on the peculiarities of women's contribution to printing culture.

Esaminando paratesti e recensioni il testo individua i temi centrali nella ricezione di Mafia Vendetta (1964), The Council of Egypt (1966), A Man’s Blessing (1968), Equal Danger (1973) e One Way or Another (1977).
on what scholars, researchers, and practitioners of education can do to bring society “from a culture of war characterized by conflict and confrontation, to a culture of peace based on cooperation and creative coexistence”.
In January 1974, Italy’s most widely circulated newspaper Corriere della
Sera inaugurates a multi-author correspondence column, inviting readers to pro-
pose «other and new topics, including personal ones». Goffredo Parise is among
the authors involved, and develops, I argue, a particular form of collaborative
writing, involving readers as writers. In such works, dialogic stimuli transcend
barriers and hierarchies: readers become writers, each one with their style, and
personal matters become the cradle of ideas. I will present and analyze these ex-
perimental texts in the historical, cultural and social context of the time. Draw-
ing from Michail Bachtin’s thought, I reflect theoretically on dialogic textual
forms and the role of readers in literary innovation.
This record outlines the translations and reception of Parise's works abroad.
