Complete edition of the administrative acts conserved in the Archive of the Opera di Santa Maria ... more Complete edition of the administrative acts conserved in the Archive of the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, over 21,000 documentary texts, for the years of the planning and construction of the cathedral’s cupola. The activities administrated by the Opera during this period include not only the management of the famous construction site and the furnishings of the church, but also the canons’ residence and other property as well as outside projects mandated by the city’s government, such as fortifications in the Florentine territory and the papal apartments at Santa Maria Novella. The corpus, published progressively from 2001 to 2009, is supplied with Italian and English summaries of all the acts and is accessible through analytical and structured indices and active links between related documentation. An enhancement of 2015 provides guided access to photographic images of all the edited manuscripts including legible processed images of codices damaged by the 1966 flood.

The essay presents case studies of major themes, showing that Brunelleschi was highly respected but never alone in his achievement. The support of the administrative structure and the skilled and experienced workforce were fundamental to the successful realization of the great and audacious dome of Florence cathedral.
