Olivier Zuchuat
Born in 1969, Olivier Zuchuat studied Physics at Swiss Polytechnic School of Lausanne and at Trinity College in Dublin. He also studied Literature and Philosophy at University of Lausanne and Geneva. In 1996-1997, he became teaching assistant at the University de Lausanne (Switzerland). He directed several theatrical productions of plays by Bertolt Brecht and Heiner Müller. In 1998 and 1999, he was one of the assistants of the German director Matthias Langhoff, before turning to documentary cinema.
In 2023, he obtained a PHD in film studies from the University of Paris 8 under the supervision of Christa Blümlinger..
He directed manly documentary films, all released in the cinemas in Europe. Among them Far from the Villages (2008, International competition FIDMarseille and at IDFA, nominated for the Swiss Cinema Award), Like Stone lions at the gateway into nights (2013, Jury Award, DokLeipzig) et The perimeter of Kamsé (2021, competition at Visions du réel 2020).
He also edited a dozen of feature films, mainly documentaries, and worked also as editor on fictions and installations.
From 2006 to 2011, he has been teaching film studies at the University de Paris-Est Marne la Vallée. Since 2010, he teaches often at FEMIS Cinema School (Paris).
Since 2015, he is associate professeur at the cinema department at HEAD-Genève.
He co-directed the books Montage – Une anthologie (1913-2018) and Lav Diaz : faire face (to be published in 2022, Post éditions).

Faire face à l’histoire et aux conséquences tragiques des
colonisations successives, encourager les résistances,
raviver des pratiques animistes progressivement
oubliées, ou encore restaurer la dignité des disparus : les
fresques de Lav Diaz s’érigent contre le silence, l’amnésie
et le refoulement.

Les 94 textes sélectionnés ont été retraduits lorsque cela était nécessaire, puis découpés, introduits et présentés de façon strictement chronologique. Ils sont assortis d’une dizaine de rhizomes thématiques (« Les prédicats du montage », « Continuité et rupture entre deux plans », « Le temps du montage : rythme, flux, vitesse », ...) qui proposent des collisions et des rapprochements créateurs de sens, invitant le lecteur à la déambulation et au voyage.
Au fil de ces pages se dessine une autre histoire du cinéma qui va des premières utilisations du terme "montage" et de l’élaboration de « règles », aux pratiques contemporaines plus intuitives, moins théorisées et peut-être même plus modestes. Car finalement, à l’heure du flux audiovisuel et de la réalité virtuelle ou augmentée, c’est plus que jamais au travers du montage que le cinéma pense et nous pense.
