A part of the archaeological material culture discovered during the Uşak Protohistoric Survey Pro... more A part of the archaeological material culture discovered during the Uşak Protohistoric Survey Project (UPDAP) were weaving tools. Although in the UPDAP weaving tools comprise the smallest number of finds, they represent a rich collection from the Bronze Age in Western Anatolia in terms of quantity and varieties of forms. During the surveys, a small number of complete tools were found in addition to mostly broken ones. These tools, archaeologically, demonstrate that textile production was one of the livelihood in prehistoric times. The history of weaving production, which probably began in the Paleolithic period, even predates production activities such as pottery and mining. The weaving tools from the UPDAP, are divided into two groups: loom weights and spindle whorls. While the loom weights are divided into three different categories belonging to crescent, disc-shaped, and pyramidal shapes, the spindle whorls are mainly double-conical and spherical in shape. They are mostly attributed to the Early and Middle Bronze Ages, according to relative dating made of the pottery and other finds, which were documented at the the same sites, as well as from the similarities they show with the weaving tools unearthed in excavated and well-dated Western Anatolian settlements.
Uşak Protohistorik Dönem Yüzey Araştırmaları Projesi'nde (UPDAP) bulunan arkeolojik materyal kültürün bir bölümünü dokumacılık aletleri oluşturmaktadır. The Late Chalcolithic layers represented with many phases at the mound are divided into two main cultural periods. The earliest phase is the local Late Chalcolithic period that represents the societies which used plant-tempered pottery. This period is followed by the layers of the Uruk culture of south Mesopotamian origin, which used mineral-tempered pottery. We may state that Başur Höyük is a settlement in which answers can be sought to many archaeological problems such as to what extent and how the inter-regional interaction between the Uruk culture, which had carried out colonization activities in northern Mesopotamia for a long period of time, and the local societies of northern Mesopotamia was. Its possession of a quite wide variety of pottery repertoire and other small finds in both periods is among the phenomena which make it important to study the Late Chalcolithic pottery of Başur Höyük.

This period witnessed very important developments in human history such as the emergence of city and state institutions, the earliest colonial activities and the invention of writing.
One of the main topics of research related to this period is the Uruk expansion. In fact, the Uruk society of the southern alluvium established several colonial settlements in Northern Mesopotamia, an area encompassing present-day South-eastern Turkey, North Syria, North Iraq as well as South-western Iran. In the late 4th millennium BC these colonies disappeared abruptly and different cultural assemblages emerged in this area during the subsequent period. In this regard, there is still some controversy among scholars on the reasons behind the disappearance of the Uruk colonial network and whether it was a collapse or a transformation.
Researchers still have little knowledge of the Pre and Post-Uruk societies of Northern Mesopotamia. While expanding throughout Mesopotamia, Uruk people brought with them significant archaeological materials and caused crucial dynamics in Northern Mesopotamia. For this reason, scholarly attention has mainly focused on this aspect, determining the prejudice that new developments, such as metalworking and trade network, were introduced in the northern regions by the Uruk Culture. Although the Uruk Culture determined the intensification of inter-regional interactions in the northern communities, we should know more about the local Late Chalcolithic/Post-Ubaid cultures in order to define better this period.

This valley has been researched with Ilısu Dam Rescue Project just during last 30 years and the burial customs from Chalcolithic settlement in valley are an important part of Chalcolithic assemblage. The most characteristic archaeological artefacts of this assemblage is infant burial that had been buried under Chalcolithic floores as a local Late Chalcolithic tradition. All of these supplies to understand for researchers the characteristic featues of Chalcolithic assemblage in valley and chronological-terminological problems about that.

Many know it as an archaeological treasure trove, both for late antiquity
and–more recently–pre-history. For the latter, a series of
handmade red clay pots found in a pit at its necropolis proves this.
Moreover, archaeologists have also uncovered walls bearing prehistoric,
mortar-free stone masonry techniques that pre-date Hadrianopolis
itself. Both findings hints at the existence of prior settlement,
albeit brief. Hadrianopolis’s settlers most likely destroyed
much of what remained upon digging up the bedrock to build necropolis’s
burial pit. Nevertheless, what has survived into the present
day–whilst rare-dates back at least five thousand years. Despite
limited evidence, research is still on-going–meaning that we
have much more to learn.
