The new regulations were particularly controversial with regard to minors, for whom the law now grants significantly greater self-determination with regard to changing their name and their gender entry with the authorities. The number of cases of children and young people coming out as trans* has been rising for several years. The often alarmist reporting on this has fueled the debate about the SBGG. Quite a few of the contributions to the debate in this context touch on pedagogical aspects or discuss the phenomenon from psychological, social and pedagogical perspectives. The text analyzes a selection of those texts which formulate present trans*-sceptical perspectives and criticism of the Self-Determination Act. It works out which recurring discourse figures are invoked. The authors show that the positions presented as concerns are largely based on untenable or at least controversial foundations. They also point out that the arguments reinforce anti-pluralist and anti-emancipatory positions that are diametrically opposed to educational care.

My focus lies on how the Germans constructed India and Indians as different, i.e. as "the Other", and on the resulting power relations that materialised in those Indo-German encounters. The source material consists of published and unpublished writings by six German and Austrian female New Educationists who documented their time in India. Besides descriptions of how they experienced India, all of them addressed education and issues that were also discussed in the contemporary women’s movements.

On the one hand, this book offers a comprehensive account of Indo-German encounters in the field of the international New Education. On the other hand, Horn analyses the perception of “India”–or what was imagined as India–by the actors mentioned, centrally focusing on how German New Educationists and youths used references to “India” to negotiate educational issues, especially concerning their reformist concepts."

Although the German Empire lacked colonial territories in South Asia, the translation of ancient Indian texts and the circulation of images and cultural assets had a profound impact on modern Germany. Similarly, travelogues and human exhibitions at the Völkerschauen reveal a complex imaginary that oscillated between idealising fascination and the racist exoticism inherent in imperialist power imbalances. India served as a catalyst for reform movements seeking alternative everyday practices, but also as a source of racist theories. This roundtable takes a critical look at the phenomenon of Indomania in Germany. It investigates how ancient Indian knowledge and culture have been appropriated with different motivations. It focuses on colonial archives and museum collections to examine modes of display and cultural representation. Our discussion will reflect on how these imperialist histories and legacies from India can be approached today and how counter narratives can be imagined.
