Earning a PhD in translation studies from HKU in 2012, I am both a competent translator between Chinese & English and a translation scholar interested in the translation and dissemination of Chinese literature and culture, translation history and audiovisual translation. Currently I am working on a China's social science-funded project titled "中国特色社会翻译学理论建构与实践研究" [Chinese Socio-Translation Studies: Theories and Applications”]. In this interview, which took place via email in April-May 2024, Admussen reviews his career path and shares his observations about the study, translation and reception of contemporary Chinese poetry in the West. The conversation focuses on such intriguing topics as Lu Xun's prose poem collection Yecao野草in English translation, the translating, publishing, and reception of Floral Mutter: Selected Poetry of Ya Shi, Admussen's theorization about translating contemporary Chinese poetry into English, and the status quo of this Chinese genre in English translation. Informative, insightful, and sometimes inquisitive, it should be of much interest to those pursuing Chinese literature studies and literary translation studies.

Released in 2008, the Chinese martial arts film Ip Man was an overseas hit in part because the tension between its screen writing deploying certain universal strategies and its foreignized English subtitling was mitigated. In contrast, the animated film Legend of Deification(2019) met with lackluster reception abroad since the tension between its screen writing deploying virtually no universal strategies and its neutralized English dubbing was unresolved. It is argued that the principle of coordinated and balanced treatment of screen writing and translating should be implemented to better promote Chinese culture’s “going global”. Accordingly, three viable strategies are discussed.

It is found through CiteSpace analysis that the field witnessed a slow growth during 2002—2009 while the subsequent years saw a rapid rise. Domestic translation scholars have produced fruitful research though some basic issues and research problems are yet to be resolved. A critical review of select research papers shows that a majority of them are literature reviews and case studies applying western theories while original research devoted to theoretical construction need be enhanced. It is suggested that since constructing a sociology of translation in China hinges on theoretical and conceptual innovation, further efforts should be devoted to making critical use of western theories and developing unique theories that apply to a Chinese context.

These papers focus on the critical issues of theoretical construction, the translation and dissemination of Chinese classics and literary works, audience reception, etc. Meanwhile, three research orientation problems are identified: the focus is often more on translation than on dissemination; the outcome of dissemination is valorized more than the process of dissemination; the effects of dissemination are often discussed without solid reception studies. Then it proceeds to discuss the potentials of three main approaches for doing research in the field, observing that sociological and communication studies approaches still have a big room for extension and improvement while a combined approach is likely to bring about breakthroughs.

Presenting records of the historical geography of Yue, Chapter Eight “Record of the Lands of Yue” contains many place names that can pose a challenge to the translator. Drawing on Javier Aixelá’s taxonomy of strategies for translating culture-specific items, this paper investigates the translation strategies employed by Milburn by using both quantitative and qualitative methods. It is found that she mainly used cultural conservation strategies while occasionally employing domestication based on transliteration as a cultural substitution strategy. Hence, her basic approach to translation is to strive for scholarly rigor and accuracy while keeping readability in the mind. The implications of this case study for the translation and dissemination of Yue culture are discussed by focusing on four issues: Who translates? What is to be selected for translation? How to translate? Who publishes the translation?

Adopting the theoretical framework of the sociology of translation and descriptive translation studies, it strives to analyze five primary modes of translation and dissemination for Chinese literature based on case studies of English translations of modern Chinese fiction by internationally acclaimed writers Lu Xun, Mo Yan, and Yu Hua. It also aims to explore the most feasible mode of bringing Chinese literature within the reach of an international audience in the new era. The book features a solid theoretical foundation, novel research perspectives, a unique research paradigm, a well-balanced analysis of textual styles and social factors, high degree of originality and think-tank value.

This article explores the main reasons underlying translation researchers' preference for Bourdieu' s theory, including its overcoming the antinomy of objectivism and subjectivism, its affinity with translation studies, the translation scholar' s perception that Bourdieu' s theory is relatively more accessible and applicable. Then it analyzes five common problems observed in its application to translation studies by citing related domestic research, particularly several conference papers presented at the “First National Symposium on Socio-Translation Studies”. These include the selective use of a particular concept in Bourdieu' s theory, static description of the translator' s habitus, making no attempt to trace the evolution of the translator' s habitus or examine the field in which translation practices were generated. Finally, the author suggests five promising research topics that will help extend Bourdieusian application in translation studies.

This article compares the translation style of the two versions through a case study of "Flight to the Moon" in the collection. Our qualitative and quantitative analysis establishes that the Yangs' version is stylistically different from Lovell's. At lexical level, simple words thread through the Yangs' version, whose style is very close to that of the original. Lovell's version uses refined and polished words, producing a somewhat flowery style. At syntactic level, the Yangs' version stays close to Chinese sentence structures whilst Lovell's features a habitual use of addition, condensation, and reordering. At discoursal level, the number of paragraph rearrangement is similar in both versions, but the type of paragraphs rearranged and the way they are rearranged are different. At cultural level, Yang and Yang show a penchant for using conservation strategies, while Lovell prefers to deploy substitution strategies when translating culture-specific items in the Chinese original. It is argued that the stylistic differences between the two versions can be ascribed primarily to the translator's professional habitus and to the target readers the translators aimed for.
