Goge Africa is a Nigerian tourism and cultural television programme which uses media technology to preserve and showcase African heritage to the rest of the world. The reason for studying Goge is that it is currently the only outfit functioning as both a heritage institution and a privately owned fashion, music, and tourism company. It is based on content analysis of primary and secondary data. The primary data was obtained from four in-depth interviews conducted between the researchers and the brand manager and representative of Goge Africa as well as a face-to-face interview with the developers and hosts of Goge Africa, Isaac and Nneka Moses. Secondary data was obtained from relevant documents through an electronic search of databases. The findings reveal the innovative way the outfit has tried to preserve its heritage mat...

It takes a look at the first quarter of 2018 and analyzes the trending issues within the period, highlighting examples of some institutions that make use of VR and AR. The advantages of the use of VR, AR and sometimes mixed reality are also pointed out. Design/methodology/approach Libraries, archives and museums are increasingly using AR/VR technologies in their service delivery because it is trending. The year 2018 is expected to be huge for VR technology. Findings Facebook is the largest investor in AR and VR, and because Facebook is also extremely popular, many are opportune to have a go at VR and AR through the use of the Facebook social media platform. Originality/value VR “involves using 3D graphics and advanced interactions to immerse a real-world user in a simulated environment”, by the descripti...

Design/methodology/approach Ethical and legal issues in the use of VR and AR are bound to arise in future if the technology is used for less-than-laudable functions. Findings For now, the Western world uses both technologies more, even though it is free and, in some cases, less expensive than before now. Originality/value It superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world, providing a composite view. Both technologies aim to make the user feel a sense of being there and experiencing what is being viewed in real time.

Design/methodology/approach It explores the fact that data are constantly being generated daily; however, the use of these data is limited because of its unavailability to the general public in forms or formats they need. Findings Data are important to research because of their high information value, that is, value-added information that is critical for decision-making. Originality/value Data come in many forms — census, statistics, research results, figures, graphs, interview transcriptions, journal entries, etc.

Design/methodology/approach The conferences and the themes reflect the thoughts and focus of library and information professionals worldwide as seen in internet reports from wikis and blogs. Findings Thus far, data and data management is the most focused topic of 2017. Social implications Daniel Shapiro in his report on the LITA blog described his experience at the two-day workshop organized by the Library of Congress, George Washington University and George Mason University. Originality/value The workshop titled “Collections as data: hack-to-learn” had four datasets and five tools to work with. Over the two-day period, participants worked with data tools such as OpenRefine, Voyant, MALLET, Gephi and Carto. Working with the data and data analysis tools for Shapiro yielded results, but the usual process in research of formulating hypothesis is still crucial even wi...

Design/methodology/approach A critical look is taken at OSS generally as found in the literature and also on the commonly used OSS in libraries and information science work or research work. Findings It is hoped that this review will assist in pointing out the trends and aid in informed decision-making, as it concerns OSS. Social implications Akintomide (2016) described OSS as a part of human existence which is exhibited in mobile devices that run on the android operating system, to computers, laptops and servers that run on the Linux operating system, to other software (Library management software inclusive) that are open access. Originality/value The openness of it makes the users (libraries and scholars) leave documentation that steers how the open software technologies are implemented and by whom. They are free, have used commun...
