Research Institute for Intelligent Computer Systems

Research Institute for Intelligent Computer Systems (ICS), West Ukrainian National University (WUNU) was established in 2004 on a basis of Branch Research Laboratory of Automated Systems and Networks. The last one in turn inherited rights and experience of Branch Research Laboratory of Automated Data Acquisition and Processing Systems, established in 1984 by joint order of the Soviet Union Ministry of Electronics Industry of and Ministry for Higher and Specialized Secondary Education of Ukrainian SSR. According to a trend for strengthening links between the Ministry of Education and Science and National Academy for Science of Ukraine, the ICS is under joint supervision of WUNU and the Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics, National Academy of Science since 2007.

The ICS counts the 18 Research Groups, in particular Intelligent Distributed Systems Group; Intelligent Sensor Data Acquisition Group; Intelligent Robotic Systems Group; Neural Networks and Parallel Computing Group; Knowledge Bases and Ontologies Group; Information Technology and Specialized Computer Systems Group; Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Group; Wireless Systems Security Group; Project Management based on IT and Knowledge Group; Cybernetics of Complex Systems Group; Information Security Group; Intelligent Cyber Security and Defense Group; Metrology of Information Measuring Systems Group; Design and Testing of FPGA Component for Safety Related Systems; Virtual Insruments for IoT; Big Data and Data Science; Human-Computer Interaction; Hybrid Systems of Computational Intelligence. During its history as well as the history of Branch Research Laboratory, the ICS staff has received more than 150 invention certificates of the former USSR and 66 Ukrainian patents, published more than 1100 scientific papers and defended 44 DSc and PhD theses, in particular the four in 2018.

High level of the ICS’ research and development is proved by winning since 1997 more than 20 international grants and followed projects within the Horizon 2020, Erasmus+, FP7, INTAS, CRDF, NSF, NATO, STCU and bilateral international programs. In these projects the ICS partners were: the HTW Berlin. University of Thessaloniki (Greece); University of Calabria and University of Sannio (Italy); University of Coruna (Spain); University of Mons (Belgium); University of Maine, University of New Jersey, (USA); Kaunas University of Technology (Lithuania); Belarus State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics, Minsk and Brest State Technical University (Belarus); University of Newcastle (UK); Technical University of Moldova (Moldova); Pedagogical University Huazhong and Hubei University of Technology (China); University of Polytechnic Bucharest and Alexander Ioan Kuza University (Romania), Technical University of Sofia (Bulgaria); University of Siegen (Germany); Institute of Technology (Turkey) as well as the governmental research institutions – NIST (USA) and RTB (Germany) and others. Additional 15 projects were executed during this period with funding from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. This active work of ICS staff enabled to push the research facilities base for the Institute, in particular Ternopil Information-Communication Center was created using NATO fund. In 2018 was created Ukrainian-German research education center in cooperation with Hochschule für Technik und Witrschaft Berlin – HTW Berlin.

ICS researchers are organizing regular International Intelligent Data Acquisition and Advanced Computing Systems (IDAACS) Conference since 2001 every two years under IEEE’s support, the last one has held in Metz, France in September 18-21, 2019. Proceedings of the conferences are indexed in Web of Science, EI Compendex and Scopus. In 2007 the IDAACS’2007 Conference has got the IEEE I&M Award for the outstanding organization of the of the 4th International Workshop on Intelligent Data Acquisition and Advanced Computing Systems: Technology and Applications IDAACS’2007, Dortmund, Germany. The ICS has been taking part in organization of International Symposia on Wireless Systems within the IDAACS Conference since 2012 The 4th IEEE International Symposium on “Wireless Systems within the IEEE International Conferences on Intelligent Data Acquisition and Advanced Computing Systems IDAACS-SWS-2018” was held in Lviv, September 20-21,2018, ‘Lvivska Politekhnika’ (Lviv Polytechnic National University).

The ICS researchers established the IEEE Student Branch at WUNU in 1998, and the Instrumentation and Measurement / Computational Intelligence Joint Societies Chapter of IEEE Ukraine Section in 2005. The last one was awarded with IEEE Outstanding Chapter Award for activities in 2007.

In 2002 the International Journal of Computing was founded, www.computingonline.net, and it’s distributed worldwide. The Journal is issued quarterly in English. Since 2016 the Journal is indexed by Elsevier Scopus, Q3.
