While the land routes with Bangladesh and Myanmar would be strengthened, the route connecting India with China has been relatively under-developed. This is only a two-lane highway, particularly in Nathu la, leading to limitation in growth of trade volume. The issues related to BCIM need to be resolved in a more structured way so that the multiple benefits from this integrative and participative corridor accrue to all, rather than the select upstream countries only

Interestingly, Thailand also raised voice of concern related to the concept. Among many countries there are concerns related to BRI catering to Chinese dumping practices, forced transfer of technology and unfair terms of repayment of loans and financial ramifications on the host country.

The US when talking about the 1000 ship navy must have alluded to the collation of the naval strength of the allies and strategic partners so as to reach such a figure. Many ASEAN nations are deliberating about the utility of the Indo-Pacific and have proposed different versions of the treaty but Indo-Pacific and India's South Pacific approach defines its futuristic vision. In the past the then Indonesia Foreign Minister Marty Natalagewa had proposed the Indo-Pacific treaty and now ASEAN also wants to discuss the issue despite variations in the approach and subscription. Is it accepted fact that the fusion of West Pacific Naval symposium and Indian Ocean Naval Symposium would help in creating synergies and better utilization of resources? However, whether India does have the desire or is just scouting for resources and therefore wants to protect its strategic interest across the Indo-Pacific region with South Pacific as one of its anchorages. India's approach has been much lauded with regard to Indian Ocean and also its expanded Act East policy to the larger South Pacific region through its Oceania approach. The paper discusses strategic and functional aspects of India's approach under PM Modi. Looking into the structural aspects of the Indo-Pacific and particular India's approach to the larger geo strategic map, then one can see that India's policy approach with regard to the Act East policy now encompasses the outer horizons of the Western Pacific primarily South Pacific. However, the approach does not have the same intensity as in the case of the Act East policy, Indian Ocean strategy and the renewed vigor that is found in the case of the South Pacific Islands. While it is important to note that India's maritime strategy does have the military component as well as civilian component and therefore presuming that it is purely military in nature would be wrong. Also one must acknowledge the fact that India's naval strategy documents are always cited as maritime strategy document so as to magnify the larger geopolitical role that navy intends to play.
