O funcionamento da mente bilíngue é cada vez mais entendido através de investigações acerca de qu... more O funcionamento da mente bilíngue é cada vez mais entendido através de investigações acerca de questões relacionadas à aquisição da gramática de uma L2. Este artigo relata os resultados de uma tarefa de tradução que demonstrou como bilíngues do português do Brasil e inglês em diferentes níveis de proficiência expressam em inglês sentenças em PB que têm o presente simples como tempo verbal e que contêm um sintagma adverbial que expressa a duração da ação (ex: desde que viajei para a Europa eu estudo francês). Os resultados desta pesquisa sugerem esses bilíngues adquirem o present perfect em níveis maiores de proficiência. No entanto, tanto em níveis menores quanto em níveis maiores de proficiência, o presente simples parece estar disponível para os falantes bilíngues quando os mesmos traduzem essas sentenças para o inglês, apesar desse tempo verbal ser ilícito em inglês nesse tipo de contexto. O estudo ora descrito, assim, corrobora a ideia de que o grau de aprendizibilidade de um tempo verbal pode estar ligado ao tipo de relação da L1 e da L2 envolvidas.

Es... more Resumo: O presente trabalho investiga o uso dos verbos yell, shout e scream da língua inglesa. Essa pesquisa intenta contribuir para a verificação do caráter sinonímico de tais verbos com base no seu uso e, dessa forma, aprimorar o ensino que se faz deles. Utilizamos como corpus de referência o Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). As hipóteses intuitivas sobre o uso de cada verbo foram verificadas da seguinte forma: observou-se a frequência normalizada de cada verbo, o uso dos mesmos em cada registro, realizou-se uma busca dos sinônimos de cada verbo, analisou-se a lista das colocações mais frequentes e explorou-se as linhas de concordância de cada verbo. A última parte do estudo consistiu em procurar os verbos em dicionários para checar se as definições mais frequentes dos dicionários correspondem aos resultados encontrados na investigação realizada no COCA. A pesquisa realizada permitiu verificar que os verbos yell, scream e shout não podem ser considerados sinônimos exatos, pois cada um é utilizado em contextos específicos, havendo variação lexical, sintática e semântica no seu uso. Ademais, o estudo do uso dos três verbos nos diferentes registros também comprovou que há variação entre eles.
Abstract: The present study examines the usage of the English verbs yell, shout e scream. This research aims at contributing to the investigation of their synonymic character based on their usage, hence improving the teaching of the verbs. The Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) was used as reference corpus. The intuitive hypotheses about the usage of each verb were verified: the normalized frequency of each verb and their usage in each register were observed; a search on the synonyms of each verb was done; the list of the most frequent collocated was analyzed; and the concordance lines of each verb were explored. The last part of the research consisted in consulting the verbs on dictionaries, in order to check whether the most frequent dictionary definitions corresponded to the COCA corpus investigation results. It was possible to verify in this study that the verbs yell, scream e shout cannot be considered exact synonyms, for each one of them is used in specific contexts. There is lexical, syntactic, and semantic variation in their usage. Moreover, the analysis of the usage of the three verbs on different registers also proved to be variation among them.

Como docentes de Inglês como língua adicional na Rede de Educação Profissional e Tecnológica, fre... more Como docentes de Inglês como língua adicional na Rede de Educação Profissional e Tecnológica, frequentemente ouvimos discursos de professores de outras áreas do conhecimento acerca de sua falta de habilidade com o Inglês, principalmente com a leitura e escrita de trabalhos acadêmicos, práticas importantes para seu desempenho acadêmico e profissional. Diante disso, elaboramos um curso de Inglês para Fins Específicos que procurasse atender a essas necessidades tão diversas. Buscamos fundamentos teórico-metodológicos de Inglês para Fins Específicos (Ramos 2004; 2005), estudos sobre Gênero Textuais (Hyland 2002, Swales 1990) e Escrita Acadêmica (Swales 2009), almejando contribuir para a formação em leitura e escrita acadêmica em Inglês dos profissionais em questão. Este trabalho, portanto, tem por objetivo apresentar os resultados dessa experiência em uma instituição federal de ensino e discutir propostas que possam contribuir para incrementar o ensino de inglês para fins específicos no contexto tecnológico.

The writing of students has been widely focused in scientific research in the area of Linguistic ... more The writing of students has been widely focused in scientific research in the area of Linguistic Studies, whereas teachers´ literacy practices have not yet deserved the same emphasis. In this study, we aim at turning the attention to the latter, in order to show that when it comes to academic writing, learning is constantly sought by all. The present research had the purpose of investigating academic literacy practices occurred in a Brazilian higher education institution and the impact of such practices on its internationalization process, through the lens of university professors. The research was conducted in the context of the Workshop Researcher Connect, a workshop designed to assist academic professionals who are required to communicate in English in international and multicultural settings. Seventeen people attended the workshop, which took place at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). The data collection for this case study consisted in applying questionnaires prior to the workshop and doing interviews after it.
Some data pointed to recent academic changes, such as the alternative format of theses and dissertations, and this resulted in the use of such format in this thesis. The discoveries of this study have been divided in four scientific articles. The first brings reflections and examples concerning the alternative format, as well as highlights productivity
requirements present in the academic world. The second article shows that neither teachers, nor students are going to be fully prepared to write and publish in English. The third depicts features that are commonly “hidden” in the internationalization process. Finally, the fourth article demonstrates that collaboration is paramount in the producing
and sharing of research. The academic literacy practices, intrinsically social activities, are seen as indispensable to effective and integrative internationalization processes.
