But design before twentieth century can trace its lineage to art and craft. Even before the birth of constructivism the issues of usability, customization and user experience were part of the domain of art and craft practices. So the re-examination of ancient art will lead us to the traditional knowledge about design. This paper is an effort to bring to the attention of graphic designers an interesting method of preparing grid for dynamic layouts. Grid is a well known and well studied tool in graphic design, especially in print media and typography. The paper will throw light on two pre-modern concepts, radial grid and oblique grid, from perspective of graphic layout. The phenomenon is observed in ancient Indian art by an artist-art historian, Alice Boner. This is a synchronic study with the review of early medieval texts, analysis of medieval artworks and reflections on contemporary design. The effect of oblique...

Study of the medieval Indian art and crafts through the design perspective may open lot more opportunities to relocate the design practice in Indian context. This work can be described as cross-pollination between Indian image making tradition and Typeface design, where the first is providing a structural tool for the experimentation in the other. This paper is divided in two parts. The first part presents a need for new approach in Devanagari type face design. Second part is the experimentation in font design based on Image making process in Indian tradition. The experiment generated a new font in which a spine for each letterform is designed based on a combination of regular horizontal grid and newly introduced angular grid.

However, these studies suffer from the limitations that the interactions were highly restricted by the experimental settings. This paper explores the potentials of blindfolded architects using their body to interact with the virtual architectural spaces that they create in their mind's eye while designing. The results reveal two major strategies used by architects, moving the visualizations in sync with the bodies and moving within the fixed visualizations. The paper also details the nuances of how architects interacted with these visualizations.
