One issue is that library schools do not prepare their graduates for this transdisciplinarity. This response to Anne Gilliland's paper rehearses the state of the profession with respect to its current and future issues, including such things as various methods of preservation (even automated preservation in the creation of materials),“[i] ntegrating access across time, systems, and communities,” developing standards for best practices, developing ...

The Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) has been prominently mentioned as a mechanism for encoding bibliographic data. This paper will examine the problems and potential of applying SGML to the USMARC record standard, with a particular emphasis on issues of field order and ...

A closer look, however, reveals that the majority of such institutions and key practitionersboth commercial and not-for-profitremain committed to 19th century conservation theory and models. This panel features interactive case studies that illustrate participants' practical and theoretical experiences with multimedia and new media ...

In this paper, the issues surrounding the preservation of born-digital cultural heritage are described and explored, and preservation strategies for born-digital cultural heritage are recommended based on the UNESCO's Charter for the Preservation of Digital Heritage. The authors believe that a major focus of digital preservation efforts should be the preservation of born-digital heritage materials.

Given FRBR's scope and influence it is surprising that it has received so little attention from the information science research community. This panel is intended to convene that discussion. Four panelists will raise a variety of issues, focusing primarily on theoretical topics.
