Tom Bourne
Tom Bourne is Professor of Practice and research team leader in the Department of Surgery & Cancer, within the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London & Visiting Professor at KU Leuven, Belgium. He is Consultant Gynaecologist at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital, London. He has a specialist interest in early pregnancy complications, emergency gynaecology & gynaecological ultrasound. In 1994 he worked at the University of Göteborg in Sweden as Swedish Medical Research Council visiting scientist fellow investigating ovarian function & extended his ultrasound & endoscopic surgical experience. He wrote his Ph.D. on the detection of ovarian & endometrial carcinoma. He furthered his surgical training with Olav Istre in Norway & Jan Deprest in Belgium.
He was appointed consultant Gynaecologist at St George's in 1996, obtained the MRCOG in 1990 & FRCOG in 2003. He was conferred as Reader in acute gynaecology & gynaecological ultrasonography at the University of London in 2005 & appointed visiting Professor at KU Leuven, Belgium in 2007. In 2008 he left St George's to join the University Hospital in Leuven whilst taking up a post at Imperial College.
He has edited six books, published over 300 papers in international journals & been invited to speak at numerous international meetings. He is on the Board of the International Society for Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology (ISUOG), and medical advisor and trustee of the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust. He is a member of the MRC panel of experts & an expert advisor to NICE. He sits on the ultrasound training committee of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG). In 2014 he was elected an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). In 2014 he was also elected President of the Association of Early Pregnancy Assessment Units (AEPU) in the UK. In 2016 he became director of early pregnancy research at the new National Early Miscarriage Research Centre in the UK - a collaboration between the universities of Warwick, Birmingham and Imperial College. He was awarded honorary membership of the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) in 2016.
His current research relates to early pregnancy complications, Biomarker discovery, CS scars & the diagnosis of ovarian cancer. His H-index is 50 (Web of Science) & 75 (Google Scholar).
He consults privately at the Womens Ultrasound Centre at 19 Harley St, London (Tuesday), & Parkside Hospital in Wimbledon (South-West London) on Monday & Wednesday.
