The choice of a valid assessment tool is crucial. The Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire 1 (AVVQ) and the ChronIc Venous Insufficiency quality of life Questionnaire 2 (CIVIQ-14) are two disease specific QoL questionnaires in common use. Different studies have utilized either of these QoL tools, making it challenging for the clinician to make direct comparisons between studies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the AVVQ and the CIVIQ-14 to enable better comparison between studies and to compare these disease specific QoL tools with generic QoL and clinican driven tools. 3

Our aim was to define the contemporaneous rate of groin SSIs, determine clinical sequelae, and identify risk factors for SSI.

Proper risk assessment and thromboprophylaxis could mitigate this hazard; however, there are currently no evidence-based or consensus guidelines. This study surveyed UK and Republic of Ireland vascular consultants to determine areas of consensus. Methods A 32-item survey was sent to vascular consultants via the Vascular and Endovascular Research Network (phase 1). These results generated 10 consensus statements which were redistributed (phase 2). ‘Good’ and ‘very good’ consensus were defined as endorsement/rejection of statements by >67% and >85% of respondents, respectively. Results Forty-two consultants completed phase 1. This generated seven statements regarding risk factors mandating peri-procedural pharmacoprophylaxis and three statements regarding specific pharmacoprophylaxis regimes. Forty-seven consultants completed phase 2. Regarding venous thromboembolism risk f...

A systematic search of EMBASE and MEDLINE databases was performed in February 2019, using search terms relating to the domains DFU and NMES. All primary evidence assessing outcomes of NMES in DFU were included. Of 344 references obtained from database searching, 7 met the inclusion criteria and included a total of 140 participants, 77 of whom had DFU. All included studies used prospective designs. Two studies demonstrated improvements in chronic ulcer healing with NMES use; however, in each study, only 3 of the included participants had DFU and subgroup analyses based on ulcer etiology was omitted. The remaining 5 studies were produced by the same research group and positive effects of NMES (in combination with heat therapy) on DFU healing were consistently demonstrated. They reported significantly better healing rates with...

There is controversy as to their actual cause with the debate still ongoing as to whether it is primarily an ascending or descending condition. Several potential risk factors have been identified and the most likely risks are increasing age, family history, and pregnancy. They cause a variety of physical symptoms, the most severe of which is ulceration, and also have an adverse effect on the quality of life of patients. Treatment of varicose veins, in turn, has been shown to improve patients’ quality of life.

Treatment of the condition has been demonstrated to improve patients' physical well-being and quality of life. Surgical treatment has for a long time been the ‘gold standard’ method until the launch of endovenous thermal ablation towards end of the twentieth century. Indeed, being less invasive and offering the possibility of day-case local anaesthetic procedures, they have gradually become the mainstay of contemporary varicose vein treatment. Vein ablation using steam and microwave are new additions to thermal methods, but there is currently insufficient evidence as to their effectiveness and place in the management of varicose veins. The superiority of thermal ablation is now being challenged by endovenous non-thermal methods. Foam sclerotherapy, until recently the only endovenous non-thermal technique available, has been joined by mechanochemical ablation and cyanoacrylate glue as viable alternatives to thermal ablation. It is believed that these new non-thermal methods will be able to offer additional benefits to patients. This review of thermal and non-thermal ablation techniques assesses their respective merit in the management of varicose veins.

Results A total of 138 participants were recruited. Most GPs (85%) saw fewer than 50 patients with CVD a year. Thirty-one percent were aware of National Institute for Clinical Excellence referral guidelines for CVD and 36% were aware of and agreed with local referral guidelines. Eleven percent were aware of clinical venous scoring systems. Sixty-three percent believed mild CVD ...
