Alcuni tra i poeti ebrei più importanti hanno ripreso il tema del viaggio nell’oltretomba, ma in ebraico e basandosi su fonti della loro tradizione intellettuale; anche la terzina ha conosciuto un certo successo nella versificazione ebraica. Nell’800, Dante è stato visto da alcuni intellettuali ebrei eminenti come un esempio non solo di alta letteratura ma anche di denuncia morale dei vizi, una specie di profeta moderno; rappresentò per loro la ‘gloria italiana’ da affiancare al profeta Mosè, la gloria ebraica. Elia Benamozegh (born—1823 in Livorno and died—1900 in Livorno)—philosopher, biblical exegete, te... more Elia Benamozegh (born—1823 in Livorno and died—1900 in Livorno)—philosopher, biblical exegete, teacher at the Rabbinical College—was an original and fruitful thinker. At a time when the Jewish kabbalah, or esoteric tradition, was considered by the protagonists of Jewish studies as the result of an era of intellectual and religious decadence, Benamozegh indicated it to be the authentic theology of Judaism. In numerous works of varying nature, in Italian, French and Hebrew, the kabbalah is studied by comparing it with the thought of Spinoza and with German idealism (Hegel in particular), and, at a later stage, also with positivism and evolutionism. Benamozegh formulated a pluralistic religious philosophy open to progress by constantly referring to the first phase of Vico’s historicist philosophy and above all to the work of Vincenzo Gioberti. We can read this philosophy as an original and consistent response to the challenges of Modern, secularized thought.

Therefore, the study of this tradition is necessary, but it cannot stay alone: the void caused by this broken continuity is filled with modem Hebrew/Jewish culture. The article deals also with the duality particularism/universalism in Jewish culture and its difficulties, due to the lack of political and aesthetic reflection on it. Our workshop will be devoted to the theme of (Jewish) minority in Italy, and more specifically to... more Our workshop will be devoted to the theme of (Jewish) minority in Italy, and more specifically to how the problem of minority was defined and how, both on the Christian and on the Jewish side, Jewish presence was (or not) considered the presence of a minority. We are not talking about how Jews looked at Christians and Christians at Jews, which would be a huge and very vague subject, but rather how, in language and categories that remain to be specified, the presence of a minority (i.e., a smaller, different, and self-identifying group) was conceived in a society typically portrayed as a homogeneous body and totally Christian. A clarification is needed here: just as there is no obligation to believe that this putatively Christian society constitutes a homogeneous body, one can and must question the assumption of culturally and socially homogeneous Jewish population in early modern Italy. The latter was also stratified, especially in terms of class and gender, and subject to internal oppositions. Our reflection extends therefore to the very relevance of the concept of minority; we want to question this scholarly category and determine if its use seems convincing.
Moses Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed has certainly been the most influential Jewish philosoph... more Moses Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed has certainly been the most influential Jewish philosophical and theological text — from the time of its composition until today. Written around 1190 in Judeo-Arabic, the Guide was soon translated into Hebrew twice, by Samuel Ibn Tibbon and by Yehuda Al-Ḥarizi. This issue of YOD deals with less known translations of the Guide, that have been composed by Christian and Jewish authors in Latin, Spanish, Italian, Hebrew, between the 13th and the 17th centuries.These versions testify to the long-lasting vitality of the Guide in different cultures and times.

כתביו משקפים לא רק את היקף ידיעותיו ורוחו הרבגונית, אלא גם את שאיפתו לשלב בחייו תחומי דעת שונים ומגוונים, המבוססים על השכלה כללית רחבה ומקיפה בתחומים שונים.
