CCBEs are used to inhibit the production of acid mine drainage (AMD) resulting from the oxidation of sulphide minerals in waste rocks and mill tailings. Under humid climatic conditions, CCBEs installed on tailings are generally designed to limit oxygen migration into the disposal site. This type of

AMD is the result of the natural oxidation of sulphides exposed to air and water. When mining wastes have the potential to produce AMD, these reactive wastes have to be managed to meet existing environmental regulations. The LTA site (property of

The laboratory (or field) determination of the WRC can however be time consuming and difficult to conduct. A practical alternative, particularly useful at the preliminary stages of a project, is to estimate the WRC using a predictive model based on basic geotechnical properties that are easy to obtain. One common limitation of such predictive models is due to hysteresis effects, which are not taken into account by most of these models. The authors present in this paper an extended version of the Modified Kovács (MK) predictive model that incorporates hysteresis of the WRC along different paths, including the main wetting and drying curves and the wetting and drying scanning curves for granular soils. The model formulation is presented, and predictions are compared to experimental data obtained on different granular soils. The results show a good agreement for the main and scanning curves.

The value of SSA can, for instance, be used to assess the hydraulic conductivity and moisture retention curve. Various methods have been proposed to evaluate the SSA of granular materials from the grain size curves. In this paper, a new approach is presented to estimate SSA for S-shaped grain-size distributions that can be represented by two-parameter lognormal distributions, using the equivalent mean diameter DH. Calculated values from this method are compared with those obtained from existing analytical equations that rely on grain size curve parameters. The introduction of the proposed relationship in the modified Kovács (MK) model developed to predict the water retention curve is also discussed in a preliminary manner.
