The authors present the first results of a larger study, which considers imports of Attic red-figured vases (V and IV centuries BC) from Iasos of Caria. The excavations going on for more than half a century by the Italian Archaeological Mission. The information presented here show that the findings come primarily from town areas and not from graves, usually from secondary position. The chronology concerns V century BC in 35% of cases, IV century BC in 65% of cases. The presence of craters is massive (almost 80% of findings), while the composition of the remaining vessels is very varied and here they are presented according to function: Pouring Vessels (oinochoai, choes, hydriai and pelikai), Drinking Vessels (kantharoi, skyphoi and kylikes), Vessels for Food Service, Oil Container (lekythoi, gutti, askoi, feeeder), Toilette Vessels (lekanides). Also important is the presence of panathenaic amphorae and white ground lekythoi.

Through the years, articles and monographs have presented the results of the Italian archaeological excavations, providing architectural and artefactual evidence for habitation at Iasos that extends at least from the third millennium BCE through the Byzantine Period. Although some fragments of Athenian red-figure pottery have been illustrated and discussed, particularly in recent years,a fuller treatment of all this material has long been desired. Through the inspiration of F. Berti, former Director of the Italian Archaeological Mission, F. Curti and A. Parrini have undertaken the study of all the red-figure from Iasos, and this present volume is the successful result of their persistent efforts.
