Abdul-Moomin Adams is a Lecturer in the Department of Governance and Development Management, S. D. Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, Wa, Ghana. He holds a Master of Science degree in Development Policy and Planning from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Integrated Development Studies from University for Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana. He is a member of the Ghana Institute of Planners and has eight (8) years of experience in teaching and research at the tertiary level. His current research interest areas are: microfinance, climate change, economic & social policy, water infrastructure management, environmental sustainability, and livelihood sustainability analyses. He has experience in participatory research projects and capable of blending qualitative and quantitative research approaches. He has supervised twenty-four (24) undergraduate dissertations and nineteen (19) diploma term papers. He has also published seven (7) research papers and one (1) book chapter in peer reviewed journals across various areas. He is currently a reviewer for African Journal of Science, Technology, Innovation and Development (AJSTID), Taylor & Francis Ltd., UK; Food Security, Springer, Netherlands; Asian Journal of Medicine and Health, India; South Asian Journal of Social Studies and Economics, India; World Medical and Health Policy, UK; and an editorial board member for Journal of Social Science Studies, Macrothink Institute, USA. He has reviewed a total of ten (10) manuscripts for these journals.

To help inform interventions on clean cooking fuel use, this study explored the influence of socioeconomic and demographic factors on urban household choice of cooking fuel (clean vs. unclean) in Ghana, using the 2014 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey, a national representative survey data. The factors explored were sex of household head (HH), age of HH, marital status of HH, household size, educational level of HH and household wealth. Data were analysed through simple percentages, chisquare test and binary logistic regression. A statistically significant association was found between all six socioeconomic and demographic factors, and urban household choice of cooking fuel. However, from the odds ratios, we identified household wealth as the main determinant of urban household choice of clean cooking fuel because clean cooking fuel and equipment are expensive compared to unclean cooking fuel. We recommend that interventions aimed at scaling up urban households use of clean cooking fuel in Ghana and similar environments should include price reduction and/or subsidization of clean cooking fuel and equipment as well as economic empowerment of poor households.

This is partly because of the limited access to formal and informal financial services, especially in rural communities. The village savings and loans associations (VSLAs), therefore, serve as a leading conduit for increasing investment, economic empowerment, and poverty reduction. However, this assertion has no empirical evidence in the Upper West Region-the poorest region in Ghana. This study examined how VSLAs contributed to farming activities and assets accumulation of participants in the two poorest districts in the region. The study deployed the mixed research approach and the after-only study design as the strategy of enquiry. Using random simple sampling, the study selected 206 respondents for the survey, while purposive sampling was relied upon to select discussants of focused groups. Questionnaire, focus group discussion guide and camera were used to elicit quantitative and qualitative data. The study used assets, farm investment, investment in education and health, and household food as benchmarks for measuring the contributions of the associations. Descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney U test were adopted to analyse the quantitative data, while the thematic analysis was used for the qualitative data. The study found that participants procured productive and non-productive assets after joining VSLAs. They also spent on food, health insurance, and education materials. Thus, the funds were thinly spread on many investment items, which hinder the realization of the full potential of the associations. The study recommends that participants should direct their investment towards procuring more productive assets.
