BACKGROUND The handover of patient information and care at the change of nursing shift is an essential, albeit risk laden, time consuming activity in clinical practice. DESIGN A convergent parallel mixed methods design was used. METHODS Thirty episodes of bedside handover were concurrently audio recorded and observed using a researcher developed tool modelled on the five domains of the British Medical Association's Safe Handover-Safe Patients framework. The audio recordings were analysed using content analysis. Quantitative and qualitative data generated, were then triangulated to develop a more complete interpretation of the structure, process and content of information transferred at the patient's bedside during the change of nursing shift. This study followed Good Reporting of a Mixed Methods Study guidelines. RESULTS Bedside handover was obse...

All over Europe there is a need to educate students and professionals in health and social care with the right competences to work with older people. Therefore this European Core Competence Framework for health and social care professionals working with older people is developed in the context of international cooperation between 26 universities and universities of applied sciences as part of the European Later Life Active Network (ELLAN). The ELLAN is a Lifelong Learning Programme project funded by the European Commission for the period September 2013 – September 2016. The consortium included 26 partners from 25 countries in Europe. The ELLAN project promotes European cooperation and exchange of innovation and good practice related to the ageing population and to the educational preparation of those professionals in health and social care that work with older people. Questionnaires are one of the most widely used data collection methods. The use of questionnaires constructed and validated in a setting to other setting is an essential aspect in international studies, which have as main objective to compare and deduce similarities and differences within different contexts. There are three main aspects in validation, the linguistic, the cultural and statistic validation, all these three aspects are essential during theprocess. Materials: Two questionnaires were used: Attitudes towards Older People Scale (Kogan1966) and Students’ Perception of Working with Older People Scale (Nolan et al, 2006). Methods: Five Countries were involved in the study namely Ireland, Finland, Germany, Latvia, and Italy. Back translation methodology was used in order to translate questionnaire (Lingu...

In Ireland, evidence-based guidance has been developed in order to address key features of dementia palliative care, including the management of pain, medications and hydration and nutrition. The aim of this study was to identify and explore the factors affecting the implementation of evidence-based guidance on dementia palliative care. Methods The Consolidated Framework for Implementation (CFIR) guided a mixed-method pre-post study. One guidance document pertaining to the management of pain, medication or hydration and nutrition was implemented in three long-term care facilities. Participatory Action Research in the form of work-based learning groups was used to implement the guidance, drawing on a situational analysis (pre-implementation). Staff questionnaires and audits were conducted pre and post-implementation while champion interviews were also conducted...

Training nurses and midwives in compassionate care is known to yield positive nursing, midwifery, and patient outcomes such as increased job satisfaction, reduced burnout, improved patient satisfaction, and enhanced quality of life. Aim To explore nurses’ and midwives’ views of a three-day program entitled “The Leaders for Compassionate Care Program” from the perspective of participating nursing/midwifery leaders, directors of nursing/midwifery, chief directors of nursing/midwifery, and program facilitators. Methods A qualitative descriptive design was adopted. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants (n = 15). Individual and focus group interviews were conducted via telephone and teleconferencing using a semi-structured interview protocol. Data were analyzed using inductive content analysis. Findings Participants perceived the program as innovative since it involved teamwork and networking and helped reiterate the human element of care. Participants identified the knowledge and expertise of the program facilitators as enablers to learning. The facilitators were committed to delivering a program that met the needs of individual leaders. Discussion Findings suggest the need to explore the long-term impact of the program, offer similar programs to junior and senior nursing/midwifery leaders, and maintain the networking that took place during the program. This could be achieved through conducting follow-up sessions and masterclasses. Conclusion The program served as an opportunity for the leaders to take time out, reflect on their practice using a compassionate care lens, network with colleagues from different institutions, and develop leadership skill.

Appropriate documentation and processes are key in assisting the provision of quality, safe, person-centred care when transferring older persons from residential to acute care settings. This paper reports on the design phase of a national transfer document for older persons. The objective was to inform the development of a draft national transfer document. Methods Development consisted of two phases 1) an integrative review and 2) focus group interviews with stakeholders. The review was guided by Whittemore and Knafl‘s (2005) integrative review framework. Data from studies using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies were extracted and thematically analysed. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, focus group interviews (n=8) were conducted with a convenience sample of key stakeholders (n=68) to establish their persp...

Current transfer documentation is diverse; often only containing basic information and very little person centred patient information. The objective of this HSE National Clinical Programme for Older People funded study was to develop a national person centred transfer tool, for use during patient transfer between residential and acute services. Following an extensive literature review, focus group interviews with stakeholders and input from an expert panel, a pilot transfer document was developed. This paper reports on the pilot study of this document. Methods Researchers, in consultation with the expert panel, developed questionnaires. Questionnaires were quantitative, with three open-ended questions. Of the 28 residential settings and 3 acute settings that were contacted, 26 residential and 3 acute settings (93%) participat...
