The dye is obtained by combining tannins from different plants with the iron present in the sludge. After a complicated reaction, “ferric pyrogallate”, an insoluble black complex, is formed. Given the artisanal nature of the process, the muds involved have never been identified from a mineralogical and geochemical point of view, in order to evaluate their role in this reaction. On this occasion, samples from very diverse cultural areas have been analyzed and they have been found to be mixtures of clays and other minerals, including iron. The results support the hypothesis that the environmental conditions prevailing in the different mud deposits (bogs and swampy soils) are responsible for the present iron reaching the oxidation state required for this process to take place.

Although European textile technology was introduced in the New World soon after the arrival of the Spaniards, it can be easily accepted that the descriptions about indigenous dyeing procedures gathered in the chronicles generally refer to genuinely autochthonous practices. When the botanists of the Spanish scientific expeditions to South America in the XVIII century, later reported about the plants used by local dyers of Peru and Colombia, those happened to be the same as the ones mentioned in the previous centuries. Furthermore, ethno-botanical data gathered by Francis MacBride in his Flora of Peru 1 , during the first half of the twentieth century, again coincide with preceding information. Finally, ethnographic field research conducted by the author between 1986-1992 with dyers o...

Abstract At present, only a small number of Mesoamerican codices have survived. None of these texts provides direct information on the indigenous artistic technology and, more specifically, on the materials and techniques of writing and decoration of these codices. For this reason, references and comments of the Spanish chroniclers, as fray Bernardino de Sahagún, constitute the main textual source for pigments and dyes used by native artists and scribes. This information about the Mesoamerican artistic praxis can be contrasted with the results of the laboratory analysis of the few existing pre-colonial manuscripts. Moreover, the analysis of Post-Hispanic codices provides important information relating, on the one hand, with the knowledge and adaptation of new pictorial materials introduced by Spanish artists; and, on the other hand, the persistence of the traditional painting techniques in the colonial workshops.
