Design/methodology/approach – In an internet-based experiment, the paper systematically varies environmental and price information about food products and measures the effects on product choice. In addition, the paper varies the condition of choice. Findings – More complex and detailed environmental information, compared with simpler and less detailed information, was paired with a stronger preference for environmentally benign products. This effect was accentuated when the task was to minimize costs compared with that to promote the environment. Negative information, which is bad for the environment, had a stronger effect than positive information. Originality/value – The research shows that detailed information emphasising potentially destructive environmental consequences may promote the choice of environmentally sustainable products among professional purchasers.

Recent research suggests that inducing affects such as fear and worry may have positive effects. Objective. - To investigate whether worry in addition to personalized information about emissions of carbon dioxide would influence lay people's intentions to change consumption-related personal activities causing carbon-dioxide emissions. Method. - A municipality-provided tool to calculate their annual carbon dioxide emissions was used by 135 university students who after being informed about negative consequences of global climate change stated their intentions to change a number of personal activities to reduce carbon dioxide emissions during the following 12 months. They also rated how worried they were about eight global climate change consequences. Results. - Intentions to change travel, energy use at home, food consumption, involvement in environmental organizations, and support of environmental policies increased with worry. An interaction was also observed such that high-emitters' intentions to invest in energy-efficient infrastructure increased more with worry than did low- and medium-emitters' intentions. Conclusions.- In line with recent research positing that affect increases preventive actions, the hypothesis was supported that intentions to change personal activities to reduce carbon dioxide emissions increased with participants' worry about the consequences of global climate change.

Promoting both would be efficient unless they are negatively related. In a survey of 476 Swedish residents it is shown that intention to purchase eco-labeled electricity is weakly positively related to intention to reduce electricity consumption. It is also found that intention to purchase eco-labeled electricity but not intention to reduce electricity consumption is positively related to a self-transcendence versus self-enhancement value orientation.

Respondents were 118 undergraduate students. The first study was aimed at testing a new measure of value activation. Ostensibly participating in a study concerning semantic memory, participants were presented with a list of value words to remember. They were then asked to fill in an impression formation test. As hypothesized, the value words significantly influenced the results on the test. The second study investigated the role of values in reactions to policy measures in a resource dilemma game, firstly by measuring basic value priorities, and secondly by measuring how policy measures activate values in the situation. The results showed no support for the impact of values on behaviour in the resource dilemma game.
