ABSTRACT In order to improve the transfer capability of the 220-500 kV AC transmission system that forms the power network backbone in the Russian Far East interconnected power system, two new generation system protection schemes complexes were put into operation at the Zeya and Bureya hydro power plants. Putting into operation was accompanied by the series of full-scale tests. The peculiarities of the full-scale experiments were participation of the experts from Russia, Switzerland, Italy and the USA, and implementation of diverse phasor measurement units devices and digital fault recorders produced in different countries such as the USA, Sweden, Belgium and Russia.

The full-scale experiment was made in the Siberian interconnected power system in November 2002. The cause of this exploration is a necessity to make sure that the program, being used for more than 10 years for long-term stability assessment in power systems, simulates dynamics properly. The second motive to execute the full-scale experiment is the start of processes of deregulation in the power industry and an absolute necessity to guarantee that the frequency in Russian power systems can satisfy the European standards. One of the actions to do this consists in an estimation of the frequency-control capacity of the power plants. Simulation of electromechanical transients in large-scale power systems is another side of this exploration. This paper represents the conditions of preparation, carrying-out and the results of simulation of the processes existed during the experiment.

This paper deals with simulation of distributed generation at island Russki. The well known model of gas turbines as well as wind turbines with generation based on Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) was used under simulating. A short description of this model was made in the present paper. It was shown that a virtual power plant might be used to fulfill the system protection scheme control actions such as generator rejection and remount load shedding. In addition to examination of the possible ways for emergency control at the Russian Far East Interconnected Power System the dynamics inside the virtual power plant is investigated.

The paper deals with the results of simulation of back-to-back converter stations potential, which can be implemented in large power grids and coexist with AC transmission lines in the same transmission corridor. Such conditions can be appear in the case of possible UCTE-IPS/UPS interconnection as well as in the case of coupling of the Russian Far East Interconnected Power System (IPS) and Chinese National Power Grid. In spite of the fact that the paper focuses on China-Russia interconnection the simulation experience could be used envisaging further development for the UCTE-IPS/UPS power grid. The paper has dealings with possible influence of Heihe (China) BtB plant on behavior of the Russian Far East IPS under faults at the 500 kV transmission lines.

The interconnection of the power systems of the European Community (ENTSO-e) and of the Commonwealth of Independent States (IPS/UPS) arise several challenges for which regards the operation and the emergency control of a very geographically extended interconnected power system. Recent international projects on the possibility of interconnection considered the option of synchronous interconnection through high voltage alternating current (HVAC) transmission lines. Progresses in high voltage direct current (HVDC) technologies in the last years open the possibility of investigating other interconnection philosophies such as purely asynchronous (i.e. using solely HVDC technologies), or hybrid (i.e. HVDC embedded in HVAC networks). ICOEUR, the joint project co-financed by the Russian Academy of Science and by the EU Commission has been set up to analyze possible solutions for some of these challenges with particular focus on the operation and emergency control. This paper proposes new em...

ABSTRACT The article is concerned with analysis of a possibility to use the potential of BtB converter stations to damp the low frequency oscillations to be appeared in some configurations of the prospective ENTSO-e-IPS/UPS super grid. Also the analysis of VPP utilization for the use in the system protection schemes of large scale power grids has been carried out. The fault ride-through performance of large WPPs with the use of series dynamic braking resistors has been examined. The special test power network model has been worked out to give the favourable conditions to the experts from the different countries to fulfil the team work in these areas. The simulation results allow seeing the directions of the further investigations with the use of a more detailed model of this interconnection.

Feasibility of integration for ENTSO- E and IPS/UPS power systems is the topic of the large international collaborative FP7 ICOEUR project (Intelligent Coordination of Operation and Emergency Control of EU and Russian Power Grids). For the purpose of the demonstration of a possible control strategy proposed, a simplified equivalent model of ENTSO-E and IPS\UPS power systems has been developed. This model has been used to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the ENTSO-e and IPS/UPS. Small scale of this model allows examining different emergency problems both in large scale power systems and in not large Smart Grids.

The paper illustrates the experience of application of the modern universal automation system for solving different problems constantly occurring in various areas of power industry. One of such universal automation systems has been applied in Russia both for investigation of Wide Area Measurement System features with reference to a lengthy interconnected power system and for analysis of irregular deviations of frequency in the power supply autonomous system with greatly variable load. In both cases, the identical SEL-421 devices produced in the USA have been applied as Phaser Measurement Units and as Digital Fault Recorders correspondingly. The comparison results of synchronized measurements in very lengthy interconnected power system and the simulation results of phase angles in the same power system are shown. The investigation outcomes of two utilization possibilities are illustrated: thyristor-controlled braking resistors, and PID regulation for decrease of frequency deviation in a power supply autonomous system with greatly variable.

ABSTRACT The paper deals with a method of stability investigation for Smart Grid on the example of the Russky Island power network at the end of continental Russia in the Pacific region. The new forms of cross-Gramians and Gramians of controllability and observability for both finite and infinite time were used for the investigation. The software package MATLAB/Simulink was applied for the model creation and stability investigation of the Russky Island power network. The advantage of the new method of examination for stability compared with the use of H2-norm transfer matrix of the system is shown.

ABSTRACT This paper deals with advanced control strategies for the Hybrid HVAC-HVDC interconnection of large power systems. The simulations use of a simplified model of the European ENTSO-E and the Russian IPS/UPS systems developed within the scope of the ICOEUR project (Intelligent Coordination of Operation and Emergency Control of EU and Russian Power Grids). The plausibility of ENTSO-E - IPS/UPS interconnection using a hybrid HVAC-HVDC interface is discussed and the benefits of a newly developed control algorithm for advanced control of hybrid interface are presented. The simulation results demonstrate that the centralized control of the power flows on HVDC lines allows the performance and the security of the hybrid interconnections and the interconnected power systems to be greatly enhanced.
