Abstract: If you think that there are concrete particulars and that concrete particulars have a complex constitution, you must solve (or dissolve) the Bradleyan problem of the One in Many. There are basically two ways to do this. You may, pace Bradley, claim that the constituents of the concrete particular are, by their nature, such that they must be related. The price to pay for such a move is, however, (too) high. Only if a deep-seated intuition – DISTINCTION – is rejected, can it succeed. But you need not choose between solving the Bradleyan problem and retaining a plausible intuition. You can have your cake and eat it too. All you need to do is reconsider the different ways in which a relation may stand to its relata. Again pace Bradley, you may then posit relations which stand in the ‘right ’ kind of dependence-relations to their relata, and you will, as a result, have added something to the mix able to turn what are many distinct constituents into one thing, without either con...

Bidragen skar in i varandra pa manga olika satt.

Infinite regress arguments are interesting for several reasons. They feature prominently in the philosophical literature. They are wielded, not only with great force, but also against a variety of positions and in an impressive number of different contexts – philosophy features few tools of equal range and power. Strong conclusions, such as those drawn from the premises of many infinite regress arguments, require strong justification. In this paper, I identify and investigate the reasons we should or must appeal to when arguing from the existence of an infinite regress to the rejection of the position from which the regress is derived. An infinite regress argument necessarily includes, as one of its premises, an infinite regress. To be able to generate an infinite regress it seems as if at least the following ingredients are required (Gratton, 1997):
course, it is difficult to determine the direction of causation (perhaps reductive representationalists endorse reductive representationalism partly because they do not believe in cognitive phenomenology, and not the other way around).... more
course, it is difficult to determine the direction of causation (perhaps reductive representationalists endorse reductive representationalism partly because they do not believe in cognitive phenomenology, and not the other way around). Nevertheless, in explaining the existence of introspective disagreement, we might do well to consider the broader contemporary context of the cognitive phenomenology debate. In conclusion, Cognitive Phenomenology is an excellent collection of articles on an important debate in contemporary philosophy of mind. We strongly recommend it to anyone interested in consciousness, or philosophy of mind more generally.
