MacArthur has mentioned in his best-selling MacArthur New Testament Commentary series that the parable of the good Samaritan taken from the gospel of Luke 10:25-35 has been interpreted erroneously out of context by many people. The term “Good Samaritan” today has become an idiom for the charitable individual...... He has pointed out a reality that the parable of the good Samaritan has been widely used and almost always interpreted as a charitable activity or act of mercy. Many hospitals and charitable organizations named themselves after the Good Samaritan. Most people can point out the source of the parable to Jesus. But not many people know the reason why this parable was initiated. A careful exegetical analysis of the text where the parable was recorded, the result would surprise many people. Even then, probably no one would concern about how erroneous it was interpreted hermeneutically, because such interpretation does not bring any harm doctrinally, socially, and morally. However, this matter of interpretation should be of great concern as a serious student and teacher of the Word of God. It is about the proper application of the hermeneutical principle to interpret the Word of God.

Reading through the chapters, readers would be unreservedly convinced that the promise to change the face of evangelical thought and American culture has failed..... the book Promise Unfulfilled is still considered a good book as it has collected numerous historical documentations regarding how Fundamentalists and Evangelical fell apart in modern Protestant history of the United States and the book provides understanding on how a Fundamentalist views the Evangelical camp critically. However, its value will be more appreciated by the Fundamentalists than the Evangelicals.
