Rats, in acute experiments, were injected with a single-acute dose of 3.9 g or 6.4 g or 8.5 g of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) kg(-)(1), whereas those of sublethal were injected with 1.3 g of Al2O3 kg(-)(1) 2 days(-)(1). One-way analysis of variance indicated that injected doses and the experimental periods were significantly affected by haemoglobin (Hb) content; haematocrit value (Hct); white blood cell (WBC) count; blood platelet (Plt) count; mean corpuscular volume (MCV); mean corpuscular Hb (MCH) and MCH concentration (MCHC). Objectives The aim was to evaluate sensitivity and specificity of insulin resistance (IR) as a no... more Objectives The aim was to evaluate sensitivity and specificity of insulin resistance (IR) as a noninvasive predictor of esophageal varices (EV) in hepatitis C virus (HCV) cirrhotic patients. Background Variceal bleeding due to portal hypertension is associated with a high probability of circulatory dysfunction and even death. However, routine endoscopy is an invasive maneuver which consumes effort, time, and money. IR was studied as an early noninvasive predictor of EV. Patients and methods Eighty cirrhotic patients were included in this prospective case–control study and 20 nondiabetic nonhepatic patients served as the control group. Patients were recruited from the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit of Tropical Medicine Department, Menoufia University Hospitals from January 2017 to March 2018. IR was calculated by the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR)=fasting insulin (μU/ml)×fasting glucose (mmol/l)/22.5. Results HOMA-IR showed a high statistically significant correlation with the presence and grade of EV in HCV cirrhotic patients (P < 0.001). In comparison with others noninvasive predictors, HOMA-IR gave the highest sensitivity at a cutoff value of 4.41. Next, the midclavicular liver span/albumin ratio at a cutoff value of 3.51 was followed by the portal vein diameter at a cutoff value of 13 mm. The least sensitive predictor was the platelet count/splenic bipolar diameter ratio at a cutoff value of 1414. Conclusion IR estimated by HOMA-IR can provide sensitive information for determination of the presence and grade of EV in HCV cirrhotic patients regardless of their Child–Turcotte–Pugh classification.

In spite of their powerful advantages, many open questions regarding how these small-sized chemicals may influence the environment and human health. However, scarce reports are available on the potential hazards of combined nanoparticles, taken into consideration that nickel oxide (NiO) and cobalt (II, III) oxide (Co3O4) nanoparticles (NPs) are already used together in many applications. Hence, the present work was designed to study the probable changes in some biological, hematological, and serum biochemical variables throughout 2 weeks following an oral administration of 0.5 g and 1.0 g of NiO-NPs or/and Co3O4-NPs per kilogram body weight of rats. As compared with the controls, the exposure to NiO-NPs or Co3O4-NPs solely caused significant elevations in the relative weights of brain (RBW), kidney (RKW) and liver (RLW), water consumption (WC), red blood cells (RBCs) count, hemoglobin (Hb) content, packed cell volume (PCV), and serum levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), glucose, creatinine, urea, and uric acid as well as serum activities of aspartate and alanine aminotransferases (ASAT and ALAT). In addition, remarkable declines in the total body weight (TBW), feed consumption (FC), white blood cells (WBCs) count, serum levels of total protein (TP), albumin, albumin/globulin ratio, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were caused by administration of NiO-NPs or Co3O4-NPs, separately. On contrary, the co-administration of NiO-NPs and Co3O4-NPs together caused less noticeable changes in most of studied variables as compared with those administered NiO-NPs or Co3O4-NPs, individually. In conclusion, the exposure to a combination of NiO-NPs and Co3O4-NPs suppressed the adverse effects of the individual NPs on the studied variables.

The roles of protein kinase A (PKA) and protein kinase C (PKC) (possibly involved in FSH response), were investigated using activators (Sp-cAMPS, PMA) or inhibitors (Rp-cAMPS, sphingosine) of these two protein kinases, respectively. Mouse peritoneal macrophages elicited with thioglicolate were infected with leishmania amastigotes, and the infection index determined 48 h later. The course of infection was monitored for 5 weeks in mice infected in the footpad with promastigotes by measuring the footpad swelling and parasite load in regional lymph nodes and spleen. The addition of PAF to C57BL/6 mouse macrophages significantly inhibited parasite growth and induced NO production. Treatment of macrophages with a selective PAF antagonist, WEB2086, increased the infection, indicating that endogenously produced PAF regulates macrophage ability to control leishmania infection.
