Uran Botobekov
Dr. Uran Botobekov is a scholar and an advisory board member at the Modern Diplomacy. He is an expert on radical Islam and politics in the Central Asia and the Middle East.
He holds an MA degree in journalism from the Kyrgyz National University and Ph.D. degree Political Science from the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic. His dissertation was entitled "The Political Aspects of Islamic Radicalism in Central Asia". He is also the author of more than 70 scientific and analytical articles on the new trends in the Islamic radicalism and politics in the post-Soviet Central Asian states. His scientific works were published in journals in Asia, Europe and USA.
Dr. Uran Botobekov has worked at the Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1994-1996), served as Advisor to the Ambassador of the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in Ukraine (1996-1998) and Turkey (2003-2005).
He worked as the main expert for the International Institute for Strategic Studies (1999-2000), led the Press Service of the President of the Kyrgyzstan (2001-2003).
He worked as the head of the State Policy Department at the Agency for Civil Service Affairs (2006-2008) and as deputy director at the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic (2008-2010). He worked as a Scientific Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic (2010-2014).

Against this background, the multidisciplinary anthology Religious Fundamentalism in the Age of Pandemic examines the current impact of Covid-19 on various religious groups and believers around the world.
Internationally renowned scholars such as Miguel Álvarez Ortega, Peter Antes, Yaakov Ariel, Uran Botobekov, Barbara Lucini, Anastasia Mitrofanova and Olga Torres Díaz
from the field of Jewish, Islamic, Christian, Buddhist, Political and Religious Studies, will discuss both, the theoretical understanding of the term ‘Religious Fundamentalism’ on various religions, that can differ a lot in view of the specific religious concept of ‘Fundamentalism’, as well as the practical impact of Covid-19 on the religions concerned above.
Based on scientific perspectives, the main targets of this anthology are the presentation of different (religious) interpretations of ‘Fundamentalism’ - especially in the current atmosphere of increasing populisms – and the examination of basic religious norms, habits and practices regarding believe and health by both, religious fundamentalists as well as non-fundamentalist believers.
The anthology is published by Transcript in March 2021.
